Control of nematode parasites in ruminants is directed almost exclusively at the parasitic stage in the host using conventional anthelmintic therapy. However, to complete their life cycle, parasites have to develop through a series of free-living stages on pasture. It is within this environment that there is a vast range of cohabiting micro-organisms, some of which are known to infect or prey on nematodes. These include bacteria, protozoa, viruses and fungi. To date, most interest has been focused on those organisms producing chemical toxins which have been developed as anthelmintics, e.g.Streptomyces/avermectins. Yet the potential of predacious and nematoxic fungi and bacteria for the biological control of nematode parasites of livestock remains largely untapped. These organisms may well offer a cheaper and more sustainable approach to reducing the impact of parasitism in livestock.

The levels of N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase) were measured in the endometrial epithelial tissue of the bovine uterus during the oestrous cycle and during pregnancy. NAGase levels were significantly (P<0.001) higher in the epithelial tissue of the cow's uterus during the luteal phase of the cycle and during pregnancy than during the non-luteal phase. There were significantly (P<0.001) higher mean NAGase values in the epithelial than the subepithelial layers of the uterus in the two cycle phases and in pregnancy. Leucocyte numbers were significantly (P<0.05 and P<0.001) higher in the cows' uteri during the non-luteal phase than during the luteal phase and pregnancy, respectively. It is concluded that the endometrial epithelial layer is significantly active in terms of NAGase release and that this may be related to increased progesterone concentrations. In addition, the epithelial tissue (not leucocytes) appears to be the main contributor to the total NAGase activity in uterine tissue.

Two groups of eight yearling Hereford cattle were used to assess the efficacy of injectable moxidectin in removing internal parasites. At 0.2 mg/kg liveweight, moxidectin was effective in ridding all eight treated animals of internal parasites in the abomasum, small and large intestines. The difference in worm counts between treated and control animals was highly significant (P<0.001) for all worm species present in sufficient numbers for evaluation. No adverse side-effects were observed in the treated animals.

Twenty-eight varieties of commercially-available cat food (23 canned, 5 dried) were analysed for iodine. The iodine concentration varied from less than 0.37 µmol/kg to 41.8 µmol/kg, wet weight (less than 1.48 µmol/kg to 167 µmol/kg, dry weight). Excessive or insufficient iodine intake or wide swings in iodine intake over prolonged periods may contribute to thyroid disorders in cats.

The duration of the anthelmintic activity of abamectin administered by subcutaneous injection at 200 µg/kg was determined using induced infections ofHaemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperiaspp., andOesophagostomum radiatumin cattle. Twenty-four Friesian calves, raised under worm-free conditions, were assigned to four groups of six animals using a randomised block design based on bodyweight. One group acted as untreated controls and the other three were treated with abamectin 14, 10 or 7 days before infection. At slaughter, 50–52 days after treatment (36–38 days after infection), efficacy was greater than 98–99% against all the parasite species for the groups challenged 10 and 7 days after treatment, whereas no significant activity could be demonstrated 14 days after treatment.

Giardia intestinaliscysts were detected in faeces from 12.9% of 124 brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) trapped in Auckland, Hawke's Bay, the Wairarapa and Wellington; in faecal material from 61.0% of 77 ship rats (Rattus rattus) from areas of Auckland, Hawke's Bay and Wellington; and in faecal material from 25.3% of 182 house mice (Mus musculus) from the North Island. Possums and rodents in forested areas of Auckland and Wellington city water catchments were infected. The role of wild animals in maintaining and spreadingGiardiain New Zealand is discussed.

The death of a 6-week-old alpaca being treated for acute polyarthritis is described. Post-mortem and histological findings included fibrinous mural endocarditis, lung abscessation, acute passive congestion of the liver, embolic suppurative nephritis and chronic nonsuppurative polyarthritis.Actinobacillus suiswas isolated from the heart lesion and in pharyngeal swabs from four of six clinically normal alpacas in the same flock.

An adenocarcinoma of the mammary gland was diagnosed in an aged goat with suspected chronic mastitis. On cross-sectioning, the tumour had a lobulated appearance and contained areas of calcification. Histologically, it was multicentric, exhibiting various growth patterns, including “comedo”, papillary and solid. There was no evidence of metastasis to the regional lymph nodes. A well-differentiated granulosa cell tumour of the right ovary was also present.

Shortly after a dietary change to milk, a 4-year-old female Chihuahua commenced vomiting, developed diarrhoea and subsequently passed blood. Despite treatment with amoxicillin, this dog died 7 hours after the commencement of the clinical signs.
