Approximately 80 farmed male and female red deer aged three months and over were blood sampled and biochemical parameters measured. The deer were sampled by jugular venepuncture without tranquillization. Mean values recorded were serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (19.5 IU/I), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (43.0 IU/1), creatine Phosphokinase (197.9 IU/I), plasma pepsinogen (0.91 IU/1), blood urea nitrogen (8.56 mmol/1), serum glucose (6.9 mmol/1), phosphorus (1.75 mmol/I), calcium (2.13 mmol/I), magnesium (0.74 mmol/1), potassium (4.43 mmol/1) and sodium (138.5 mmol/I). There were no significant differences in any parameter between sexes or between age groups 3-8 months, 9-18 months, or older.

The one-stage prothrombin times of 100 lambs from ten different farms varied from 13 to 24 seconds with a mean of 16.6 seconds. The extent and severity of subcutaneous haemorrhagic speckling of carcases was assessed in 775 animals from the same farms and the prevalence of this lesion was similar to that found at the same works during the 1977/78 season. The means of both one-stage prothrombin times and speckling varied significantly between groups of Iambs from different farms but there was no statistical association between the prevalence of speckling and the one-stage prothrombin times.

A condition resembling chronic malignant catarrhal fever was seen in a 9-month-old pet sika hind (Cervus nippon). From an initial acute depression, pyrexia, and anorexia, the condition progressed to include hypopyon, keratitis, lethargy, loss of condition, sloughing of one hoof and eventually death after seven weeks. There were multiple, 5 to 8mm diameter dark-red nodules throughout the mesenteries and mediastinum, along abdominal organ ligaments, and about the uterus and kidneys. Histopathology showed the nodules to be organising vascular thrombi. Concurrent perivascular mononuclear infiltrations and intravascular thrombi in many tissues confirmed that the condition was malignant catarrhal fever.

Acute epidemic salmonellosis was investigated in the winter of 1978 in 4 dairy herds in the Waikato district. The outbreaks involved pregnant or recently- calved cows. Calves were affected on only one farm.Salmonella bovismorbificanswas isolated from the faecal, uterine and environmental samples from the herd most severely affected. In this herd 20, (20%) of the cows died; 10 calves were either born dead or died soon after birth; and 10 cows were culled as unlikely to return to production.S. typhimuriumwas involved in the outbreaks in the other 3 herds and from one of these farms salmonellae were isolated from the faeces of the 2 farm dogs and from a 12-month-old infant with dysentery. Salmonellae were recovered from all of the clinically ill cows and from 36% of the asymptomatic animals. Salmonellae were widespread on the properties and were isolated from 81% of soil samples; 36% of drain swabs; and from all the pairs of rubber boots worn while collecting samples.

In this paper on the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis in horses, both degenerative arthritis and septic arthritis are considered. Diagnosis should be made on the combination of clinical examination together with the use of diagnostic aids such as radiology, intra-articular local anaesthesia and synovial fluid analysis. Intra-articular therapy appears to be the most effective in the treatment of degenerative arthritis. Excellent responses to therapy have been reported with corticosteroids, sodium hyaluronate, orgotein and synovial fluid transfer, where joints showed an absence of degenerative changes on radiographs. In septic arthritis, systemic treatment with the appropriate antibiotic, following bacterial culture and sensitivity testing, can produce good results if prompt diagnosis is made.

A slowly-absorbed aqueous suspension of betamethasone, intended for use in the induction of parturition, was administered to 10 cows. Each cow received 2ml (mean individual dose, 44.4 ± 0.5𝛍g/kg) by subcutaneous injection. Plasma samples were collected on six occasions over a seven-day period before treatment and on 21 occasions over a 29-day period after treatment. The mean concentration of betamethasone in plasma, as measured by radioimmunoassay, peaked at 0.6ng/ml 24 hours after injection and was detectable for four days. Depression of the endogenous Cortisol levels, as recorded with other long-acting synthetic glucocorticoids, was observed with this preparation of betamethasone. Plasma glucose was significantly elevated for eight days after betamethasone administration.

Sir:-.A client who uses two practices for her veterinary service ran into problems with ‘snuffles’. The owner had a further 18 kittens born to queens of unknown vaccination status (this was in January 1982). At this time it was decided to try to protect these young kittens, so a vaccination programme was started. Twelve kittens were started by Practice One and then Practice Two was asked to do the other kittens. The reasoning for this was that Practice One used intramuscular vaccine only, whereas Practice Two used live nasal, and had done so successfully in another cattery. It was agreed that a comparison of success might be demonstrated.
