Tuberculous lesions were identified over a 2-year period in 36 clinically normal red deer from a single herd. The lesions were only present in the retropharyngeal lymph nodes and lymph nodes draining the intestinal tract, indicating infection by the oral route.Mycobacterium aviumwas isolated from 27 of 29 lesions examined by bacterial culture. Grossly and histologically, the lesions were indistinguishable from those caused byMycobacterium bovis. DNA restriction endonuclease analysis revealed that all the 26M. aviumisolates available for examination had identical cleavage patterns. These patterns were identical to a New ZealandM. aviumserotype 2 isolate from a pig and were very similar to a reference strain ofM. aviumserotype 2. The DNA examinations indicated that the deer were infected from a common source that was not identified.

Supplementation of a ryegrass/white clover pasture diet with pasture silage is a common management practice in New Zealand dairy herds. The effect of this supplementation on reproductive performance has not been investigated. Five herds of 20 cows were formed before calving commenced on 1 June 1992. From 5 August to 4 September, two of these herds were fed 5 kg/cow/day of pasture silage in addition to the ryegrasslwhite clover pasture offered to all herds. Pasture silage supplementation did not alter the intervals from calving to first ovulation, first oestrus, or to conception. However, it reduced the first service conception rate (37.5% v. 53.3%; difference ± sed = 15.8 ± 10.0 %, for pasture and silage and pasture only cows, respectively). A positive effect on reproductive performance of pasture silage supplementation was not demonstrated in this trial.

An epidemiological study on four farms showed that leptospiral infection became apparent in piglets from 12 weeks of age. The intensity of leptospiruria was greatest in the first 3–4 weeks of infection and from then on declined and became intermittent. Factors affecting the cultural and serological prevalence of infection of the piglets were found to be the standard of hygiene and variations in the titre of the dam. Dams with high titres gave better protection to their young than did those with low titres. The spread of infection within piggeries was encouraged by mixing infected with uninfected pigs, which resulted in epidemics within the pens. Transmission from infected to susceptible grower pigs continuously occurred in grower houses, with a constant proportion of pigs becoming infected each week.

Sixty-four anaesthetic machines and 89 breathing circuits were surveyed in New Zealand veterinary practices. Each machine and circuit was tested for correct function. Sixty-six percent of machines checked were 10 years or older and vaporiser out-of-circuit machines totalled 72% of machines surveyed. Twenty-five percent of the temperature compensated vaporisers had been serviced within the previous 1 year, 33% serviced between 1 and 10 years ago, while the remaining 42% had no service record or had not been serviced for over 10 years. Sixty-six percent of machines had some type of scavenging device.

Three groups of eight Friesian calves, reared parasite-free, were experimentally infected with 1000 infective larvae ofDictyocaulus viviparus. Two groups were injected subcutaneously with 1% doramectin at 0.2 mg/kg body weight, one group 5 days after infection and the other 25 days after infection. A third group served as untreated controls. Faecal samples were examined for lungworm larvae on days 28, 32, 33, 34 and 35 after infection; the calves were killed and necropsied 39 or 40 days after infection and any lungworms present recovered and counted. Doramectin proved 100% effective against both 5-day-old and matureD. viviparusinfections.

One hundred and thirty-four male and female hyperthyroid cats (mean age 11.9 years) were tested for the presence of feline immunodeficiency virus antibodies. Thirty-two (23.9%) were positive. The prevalence of feline immunodeficiency virus antibodies was greater in male cats (30.5%) than in female cats (17.2%). The prevalence of feline immunodeficiency virus infection in hyperthyroid cats is similar to the prevalence of feline immunodeficiency virus in the sick cat population and less than that of sick aged cats at the Massey University Clinic and Hospital. The findings of this survey do not support involvement of feline immunodeficiencv virus in the pathogenesis of hvnerthy- roidism in the cat.

Subsequent to a possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) poisoning operation purportedly using 1% phosphorus baits, six dogs with access to poisoned possums died of phosphorus poisoning. Two dogs survived, following treatment with oral copper sulphate and parenteral vitamin K. Clinical signs included depression, jaundice, vomiting and bloody diarrhoea. Post-mortem lesions included large areas of subcutaneous, interstitial and intermuscular haemorrhage, subserosal haemorrhage and liver degeneration. Free phosphorus was detected in the ingesta of three of the dogs which died up to 7 days after the last of the poison was laid. Analysis of two batches of baits used showed P levels of 1.17% and 1.24%

Thirteen isolates ofYersiniaspp., regarded as environmental strains, were recovered from 70 sausages containing venison which were presented for sale through retail outlets. It is not possible to incriminate venison as the source of these strains because the sausages contained other food ingredients. The pathogenic potential of such environmental strains remains unclear.

Chlorpheniramine maleate (2 mg/cat every 12 h orally) and a fatty acid supplement (0.5 ml/cat every 24 h orally) were administered in combination to 11 pruritic cats. Although none of the cats had responded to the two products when they were administered as single therapeutic agents, six of the cats (54%) had an excellent response to the combination. Adverse effects were not seen. Under the conditions of this study, the combination of antihistamine (chlorpheniramine) and the omega-3/omega-6 fatty acid-containing supplement exhibited a superior antipruritic effect to either product alone.

Between January 1987 and June 1988, when cattle were in mid-late lactation and not receiving supplementary magnesium, pasture samples were taken for magnesium, sodium, and potassium analysis from 134 dairy properties in Taranaki and the Waikato, and a composite serum sample from ten cows in each herd for magnesium analysis. Urine from the same herds was analysed for sodium, and for 31 herds in 1988 for magnesium.
