摘要:
Factors associated with wounds and bruises in lambs killed at Longbum Freezing Co. Ltd have been investigated. There were no statistically significant differences in the prevalence of lesions between groups of animals of different sex and grade. When groups of unwashed lambs were compared to groups of washed lambs, from lines which were passed for slaughter by Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries' Inspectors, there was a highly significant increase in the prevalence of bruising in the washed animals. There was also a statistically significant decrease in the rate of contamination in the washed group. However, closer examination of the individual lines in the washed group revealed that this apparent effect was essentially due to two of the nine lines in the study. These problems are discussed in relation to the difficulties a regulatory authority has in making the correct decisions in relation to washing stock.

摘要:
The effect of bruising on lamb carcasses in terms of aerobic bacterial load on the affected surface was investigated. A comparison of swab samples between bruised areas and control areas on the same Caracasses showed a significant increase in the bacterial load over the bruised area. This difference might be due to a difference in the texture of the surfaces of the two areas and further studies in this field, using the tissue-sampling method, are suggested.

摘要:
dWhen administered orally at 50 mg/kg live weight to sheep for 14 days mebendazole killed almost allTaenia hydatigenadandT. ovisdcysts and significantly retarded the growth ofEchinococcus granulosuscysts. A single subcutaneous injection of mebendazole at 50 mg/kg was ineffective and was only partially effective when injected at this rate into the peritoneal cavity. The lack of effect was attributed to the slow solubilization of the injected depot.

摘要:
As the serum aspartate aminotransferase is unsatisfactory as an indicator of liver damage in cattle, the serum enzyme gamma glutamyltransferase was investigated. A normal range of 2–20 IU at 37° was established. Serum levels were raised following clinical facial eczema and in other cases of definite, or suspected, liver damage but not in situations involving muscle or kidney damage. Serum levels were raised for some months following clinical facial eczema. Mildly raised levels were found in apparently healthy cows in the 3 months following calving. An elevated serum gamma glutamyltransferase appears to be a sensitive specific indicator of liver damage, making it a useful diagnostic aid.

摘要:
Fifteen horses with symptoms of clinical respiratory diseases were treated with Bisolven(R)at the rate of 15–20g/day for periods of up to 45 days. All the cases treated showed a marked improvement clinically and radiographically. The prognosis appeared to be more favourable in those cases in which the onset of symptoms was relatively recent than in those cases in which the symptoms were long-standing.

摘要:
Two flocks of commercial meat chickens, at 6-weeks of age, exhibited ataxia and inco-ordination progressing to complete inability to sit up or walk about. Heavy mortality occurred in both flocks due to trampling and suffocation. Gross lessions of myopathy were present in adductor and sartorius muscles. Histological examination of thigh muscles and myocardium showed the lesions to be consistent with vitamin E and/or selenium deficiency in chickens. The cause of this problem was thought to be the inclusion of poultry-offal meal in the diets.
