Two commercial Aujeszky's disease vaccines, a modified killed vaccine and a sub-unit vaccine, both carrying a deletion of glycoprotein-I, were evaluated in pigs. Each vaccine was administered to two groups of four pigs, twice at 4-week intervals, with two pigs held as unvaccinated controls. All pigs were challenged with a New Zealand field isolate of Aujeszky's disease virus 3 weeks after the second vaccination. The results indicate that the sub-unit vaccine was able to protect pigs against clinical Aujeszky's disease much better than the pigs vaccinated with the modified killed vaccine when challenged with a virulent virus. However, the amount and the duration of virulent virus excretion following challenge was greater with the sub-unit vaccine than the modified killed vaccine. Pigs vaccinated with the sub-unit vaccine were shown to be latently infected following challenge. Latent infection was demonstrated by excretion of Aujeszky's disease virus from the nasal cavity after dexamethasone treatment and seroconversion of a sentinel in contact pigs to Aujeszky's disease virus.

Skin test antigens for the diagnosis of brucellosis were produced from the roughBrucellu abortusstrain 45/20. The production of two products termed Brucellin B and Brucellin W are described. The method described for the production of Brucellin W is recommended as an improved practical method of Brucellin production. The Brucellin products described were equal in sensitivity to that of a commercially available product, Brucellergen, which is used in New Zealand. Brucellin B was extensively tested in non-infected cattle and its specificity was equal to that of Brucellergen. Recommendations for the standardisation of skin test reagents for the diagnosis of brucellosis are made. Intradermal testing for brucellosis in cattle should be used only for the identification of infected herds and not as an individual animal test.

A comparative cervical skin test using 1.0 mg/ml bovine purified protein derivative and 0.5 mg/ml avian purified protein derivative was evaluated as a method for detecting tuberculosis in farmed deer. A positive comparative cervical skin test reaction was defined as a bovine response with a 2 mm or greater increase in skin thickness which was greater or equal to the avian response. Estimates of the sensitivity of the comparative cervical skin test were obtained from a series of experiments conducted on 60 deer intratracheally inoculated withMycobacterium bovis. Prior tuberculin skin testing was found to suppress the skin reactivity to a subsequent comparative cervical skin test. This effect was most pronounced at short intervals of 3–7 days, but could still be measured 60 days after the previous test. When the test interval was greater than 60 days, the sensitivity of the comparative cervical skin test was 91.4%. The specificity of the comparative cervical skin test was 98.7% when 1157 deer from 17 uninfected herds with a history of nonspecific skin test reactions were examined. There was no statistical difference in the mean skin thickness increases of three groups of infected animals tested with 2 mg/ml, 0.2 mg/ml and 0.02 mg/ml of bovine purified protein derivative respectively.

A survey of Southland farms was conducted to assess the potential for foot-and-mouth disease dissemination through normal movement patterns of farm animals and materials over a period similar to what would be expected from the time the virus arrived on a property to the time of diagnosis. Each farmer participating in the survey was required to complete a diary, recording all movements of people, animals and materials on to or off a farm during a 14-day period. The mean number of movements recorded per farm was 50. The distribution of movement distances showed the majority of movements occurred within the immediate neighbourhood of the origin, with 31.5% and 59.5% of all movements occurring within 5 km and 10 km respectively. In order to contain 95% of all movements, an area where movement was controlled would have to have a radius of 100 km. The data was then used to construct a spatial simulation model to study the movements off a hypothetical index farm. When secondary movements off primary destinations were included in the model, the mean number of movements to be traced to contain the disease was 100 (range 77–160) for a 14-day simulation period. The area required to contain 95% of all movements tended to increase slightly, depending on the length of simulation run. The mean number of high risk movements that occurred over the 100 km radius was 3.4.

Bilateral varus antebrachial deformity in a 7-month-old working dog was surgically corrected. The deformity was a sequela to premature closure of the distal radial physes after trauma to the forelimbs. Treatment was by ulnectomy and oblique radial osteotomy. Stabilisation of the fractures was maintained by an external fixation device. The treatment was successful and the dog returned to work as a sheep dog.

Malignant catarrhal fever was diagnosed in a newly imported swamp buffalo calf. This disease is prevalent in deer and cattle in New Zealand and causes sporadic losses in these species. The disease is recognised as a problem in buffaloes overseas and this paper records the first case in a swamp buffalo in New Zealand.

About 150 rare, adult, yellow-eyed penguins died over a short period during the summer of 1989–1990 on the Otago Peninsula. These were from a total mainland population estimated at 240 breeding pairs. Penguin chicks and non-breeding birds were not affected, but there were indications of shortages in feed supply for birds that bred successfully.

Grey horse melanoma or equine melanotic disease occurs concurrently with the greying of coat colour. The tumours are frequent in greying horses more than 6 years of age and it has been stated that 90% of grey horses older than 20 years are affected.

The effects of high doses of the beta-2 agonists iso-prenaline, salbutamol and fenoterol on the myocardium were studied experimentally in sheep. Each drug was given intravenously in progressively increasing doses to four sedated animals and four controls. The experiments were repeated during hypoxaemia and animals were necropsied 3 days later.
