During the years 1971–1979, 127 horses with left laryngeal hemiplegia were studied. The physical characteristics and clinical signs observed in this study were recorded in Part I and Part II of this series of papers.

This communication describes the methods used and results obtained with a 21-year-old Standardbred sire bred, using artificial insemination techniques, to a book of 108 mares during the period 11th September to 16th March, 1979-80. A positive pregnancy test rate of 93.5% was achieved. Those mares becoming pregnant averaged 4.6 inseminations per pregnancy (range 1 – 13). Barren mares, maiden mares and wet mares, irrespective of age, all achieved highly satisfactory pregnancy rates and it was noted that breeding through the January/February period improved the ultimate success rate markedly. When the official returns for the breeding season under review were returned the sire had a live foal success rate of 84%.

An examination was made of the relationship in Romney sheep between selenium deficiency and (i) the state of the liver drug metabolising enzyme system, (ii) subclinical liver damage, (iii) susceptibility to facial eczema, and (iv) susceptibility to ryegrasss staggers. The microsomal electron transport detoxifying enzymes based on cytochrome P–450 were unaffected by Se deficiency, suggesting that these enzymes are uninduced on ryegrass/clover pastures. Selenium deficiency had no effect on sporidesmin-induced liver damage, which makes it unlikely that peroxidative events countered by Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase (E.C.1. 11.10) have a major role in the mechanism of sporidesmin toxicity. Selenium deficiency did appear to suppress the development of photosensitisation. There was no major effect on ryegrass staggers and no deficiency-induced subclinical liver damage.

Four dry-cow treatment regimens were evaluated againstStaphylococcus aureusintramammary infections: 1) high persistency product at drying off and low persistency product 1 to 3 days prepartum; 2) high persistency product at drying oflF; 3) low persistency product 1 to 3 days prepartum; 4) untreated controls. Treatment 1 was no more effbzacious (64.4%) than Treatment 2 (61.3%). Both treatments were significantly different from spontaneous recovery observed in Treatment 4 (41.2%), but not significantly different from Treatment 3 (46.9%). Dry-cow therapy reduced newS. aureusintramammary infections during the dry period by half. Prepartum treatment eliminated more than 90% of newStreptococcus ubmisinfections.

Sir,—Trichomoniasis has for many years been recognised as a bovine venereal disease. The last New Zealand case reported was in 1972(2). A recent investigation of a low reproductive performance problem in a beef herd in the Tokomaru Bay area of the East Coast has again confirmed the disease's continued presence. This brief report is to remind veterinarians of the current existence of New Zealand bovine trichomoniasis and to describe methods of attempted control.

Sir, — I would like to draw your readers’ attention to the occurrence of post-stress haemorrhagic enteropathies in red deer (Cervus elaphus). Haemorrhagic enteropathy has been observed in approximately 75 percent of red deer necropsied at the Invermay Animal Health Laboratory and has also been seen in wapiti (Cervus canadensis). Deer dying with post-stress haemorrhagic enteropathy commonly have splash haemorrhages on the serosal surfaces of the abomasum and intestine and to a lesser extent on the rumen and omasum. The intestinal mucosa is heavily congested and haemorrhagic with blood present in the lumen. In many cases mucosal haemorrhage may be so severe the intestinal contents appear similar to blood. The degree of severity of the condition varies from slight to very severe and the length of intestine involved also varies from a few centimetres to the entire gastro-intestinal tract from the rumen to the rectum.
