This paper presents survey results, analysis and discussion of hill country beef production in the Wairoa County (N.Z. East Coast). Areas of reproductive wastage are identified and discussed, and the principles of a fertility control programme indicated.

This paper records, for the first time in New Zealand, the occurrence ofEperythrozoon wenyoniin the blood of a cow. Inoculation of infected blood into two splenectomized calves resulted in a heavy parasitaemia with a moderate anaemia in one calf The other calf remained refractory to infection. The possible importance ofE. wenyoniis discussed.

Calves vaccinated twice with one commercialpomonavaccine had serum MAT titres up to 1:300, warm CFT titres of 1:20 and cold CFT titres of up to 1:80. A second commercial vaccine did not elicit any detectable antibodies.

Ancylostomiasis in susceptible dogs is accompanied by the development of a microcytic, hypochromic (iron deficiency) anaemia. In the present study, anin vitrocorrelate of cell-mediated immunity (lymphocyte transformation following stimulation with phytohaemagglutinin) was used to monitor the development and maintenance of immune responsiveness during the course ofA. caninuminfection. The results showed that lymphocyte function (as assessed by phytohaemagglutinin reactivity) was significantly impaired during the later stages of infection and that this impairment was very closely correlated with the development of an iron-deficient anaemic state.

A single strain ofBacteroides nodosuswas cultured under controlled conditions on hoof agar or in either biphasic medium or hoof broth. The gross and ultrastructural appearances of organisms were compared one with the other and withB. nodosusas seen in necrotic detritus obtained from a case of non-progressive foot rot. The possible imphcations of those morphological differences with regard to the antigenic structure of cells and their suitability for vaccine production, are briefly discussed.

A survey of the prevalence ofA noplocephala perfoliatain 65 horses is described. An overall prevalence rate of 82% was found forA. perfoliatainfection and 77% of infected horses exhibited ulcerative pathology in the ileo-caecal region directly associated with this parasite.Anoplocephela magnaandParanoplocephala mamillanawere not recovered.

The development of a naturally acquired coccidia infection in lambs in Otago is described using data derived from faecal oocyst counts and specific differentiation of the oocysts. Oocysts first appeared in faeces of lambs 19–37 days after birth. Oocyst production reached a mean peak of 250 000 oocysts per gram when lambs were 40–50 days old and slowly declined with increasing age of lambs. Coccidial infections did not appear to have any obvious effect on weight gain. The numerically most numerous species of coccidia wereEimeria ovina, E. crandallis, E. ninakohlyakimovae, E. parvaandE. weybridgensis.
