A series of 10 farm trials was conducted in which the lambing performance of ewes immunised against polyandroalbumin was compared with that of untreated ewes in the same flock. The trials show that polyandroalbumin treatment is a reliable method of increasing lambing and tailing percentages in New Zealand flocks. An average of 39 extra lambs born per 100 ewes tupped was achieved on farms where ewes were given two treatments about four weeks apart and rams were introduced 18–26 days after the second dose. On farms where rams were introduced less than 12 days after this booster injection an average of 19 extra lambs born per 100 ewes tupped resulted.

Three trials were conducted to assess the size and frequency of lesions induced by an oil-based and an alum-precipitated aqueousB. nodosuscommercial footrot vaccine at two injection sites (neck and brisket) with or without prior skin swabbing with methanol. Animals used were previously unvaccinated and clean and dry at time of vaccination. Trial 1 contained 57 2-tooth Booroola Merino x Coopworth ewes, trial 2 contained 60 mixed-age Corriedale ewes, and trial 3 contained 39 rams of mixed age and sex.

A case of organophosphorus (OP) poisoning in two Rex rabbits is described. Three animals were diagnosed as having dermatitis characterised by pruritis and alopecia due to infestation withCheyletiella parasitivorax. Two of the animals were dipped in 2% malathion solution: one died within 15 hours post-dipping, the other was euthanased subsequent to the onset of convulsions. A procedure for the future dipping of rabbits is suggested, and a recommendation is made for a lower concentration of malathion to be used.

The serological identity of 234 strains ofYersinia pseudotuberculosisrecovered from domestic animals and birds in New Zealand was determined by slide agglutination test. Thirty strains were also examined by tube agglutination test. The strains were isolated from cattle (56), sheep (8), deer (117), goats (13), pigs (7), rabbits (6), guinea pigs (5), and aviary species of birds (22). All strains were isolated from animals or birds which had died or shown signs of ill health and amongst which diarrhoea was a common feature.

As a result of a Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries survey on ovine abortions, 76 isolates ofCampylobacter fetus fetuswere obtained. These isolates were from four farms in the southern Hawkes Bay, with an abortion incidence of 2.8% to 9.1%. Antisera to eight different strains ofC. fetus fetuswere made in rabbits. Strains were then examined using whole cell tube agglutination tests and sensitised Staphylococcal Protein A slide agglutination tests. Heat labile antigens were examined by absorbing antisera with heat-treated bacteria. Two broad serogroups were found, but within-group variation was demonstrated by cross-absorbing antisera. The isolates from one farm were all of a single broad serogroup. Both serogroups were found on the remaining three farms. Evidence for the presence of two major serogroups was also obtained by immobilisation tests and antigen analysis by gel diffusion.

An enzyme-linked immunospecific assay (ELISA) for the serodiagnosis ofBrucella ovisinfection in sheep is described and compared with the cold complement fixation (CF) test. ELISA was performed in microtiter plates, using horse-radish peroxidase conjugated to anti-normal sheep serum globulins, and hydrogen peroxide pluso-phenylenediamine as substrate. A heated, cell-freeB. ovisextract was used as antigen in both tests.
