摘要:
The classical formulations of Olympic ideology a century ago were founded in the worldview ofmodernismand its belief in rational, scientific progress. Currentpostmodernconditions and worldviews conflict with that original ideology and suggest a unity in the otherwise disparate aspects of change and conflict in the Olympic movement. The shift from aristocratic to commercial support, from upper-class to diverse participation, and from male European and American domination to female and global involvement all indicate diversification of the Olympics. Simultaneously, the huge growth of media technology and television rights fees have changed the Olympics. Conceptualizing the Olympics and these changes as postrnodem clarifies the relationship between the Olympics and broader sociocultural change; it also suggests new challenges for Olympic ideology.

摘要:
The two dominant sport ideologies of the 20th century areOlympismandprofessionalism. This paper documents the recent articulation between these formerly alternative codes of sport into a single organic hegemony termedprolympism; examines the manifestations and consequences of this articulation; and considers the limitations and opportunities presented by the emergence of a global sport monoculture.

摘要:
This paper explores the impact of the modern Olympic Games on women in American culture by examining the cultural roles of women and the meaning of their participation in this cultural phenomenon. The study of women at the Olympics delineates critical themes in women's history, sport studies, American culture studies, and material culture. The analysis of women's roles in the Olympics indicates the interrelationships between gender, the sporting culture, and American culture. This paper also suggests areas for further scholarly investigation, based on an interdisciplinary perspective on women, the Olympic Games, and American culture.

摘要:
The modern Olympic Games have evolved from a late 19th century curiosity into a cultural performance of truly global magnitude. This paper attempts to explain the remarkable popularity of the Olympics on the basis of the cultural performance theory of anthropologist John MacAloon and the more sociopsychological perspective of sociologist John Loy. Specifically, it is argued that the entire Olympic performance, as well as the performances of the athletes themselves, offer individuals the opportunity to address profoundly important existential questions about the nature of their personal and collective selves. In other words, every 2 years the Olympics offer us a mirror, and in it, we look at ourselves.

摘要:
In general, this essay explores the theoretical and practical political problems associated with being an Olympic anthropologist. In particular, it examines the practical attitude that an anthropological relativist should adopt toward universal humanism in pluricultural contexts. As such, this essay serves as a critique not only of the dominant Olympic ideology itself but also of the Olympic leaders who embrace the universalist claims of Olympism and the scientists of sport who reinforce the European versions of universal humanism by which those same Olympic officials typically comprehend the world.

摘要:
Despite the familiar claim that participation in the Olympic sports is broadly educational and developmental, a growing body of empirical evaluation suggests otherwise—so much so, that at the very least, beneficial results can no longer be left to chance. However important, most of what is calledOlympic educationaddresses other concerns. This paper, written by an active participant in the Olympic Movement, argues for a formal, outcomes-based pedagogy of the Olympic sports and the Olympic Games, and offers several proposals on how it may be realized.

摘要:
The aims and values of Olympism are briefly examined. Sport is then described as an inherently worthwhile practice, concemed with its own goals, standards, and traditions. The place of sport in relation to education and the curriculum is discussed, and the role of the teacher of sport as“educator”is clarified by reference to four points: (a) the teacher as an initiator into and as a guardian of the practice view of sport; (b) the teacher as an enlightened leader of discussion; (c) the teacher as a provider of individual pastoral care; and (d) the teacher as exemplar of the values to which a commitment has been made. The final section is concemed with the relationship between Olympism and sport as a form of education.

摘要:
Differences notwithstanding, the majority of health promotion and exercise behavior-change strategies appear to share identifiable assumptions and characteristics. Most can be aligned with what is called ahuman capital model, manifesting the model's language and root metaphors, implicit rules, power relationships, and bureaucratic organizational forms. This human capital model is analyzed and connected with evidence regarding health promotion and exercise behavior-change strategies. Evidence is also presented suggesting its limitations, and constructive criticism is offered. An alternative, one called ahuman development-potential perspective, is provided. Contrasting its features with the conventional assumptions of a human capital model, needs for, and values of, health promotion and exercise behaviorchange strategies are indicated that are framed within this human development-potential perspective. Here, health is broadly framed in socioecological terns, and its benefits are not merely economic (e.g., reduced health care costs, increased productivity), but moral and sociocultural as well. In brief, a human development-potential perspective not only helps individuals, but also promises enhanced societal well-being.
