摘要:
Process-product research, a relatively recent thrust in research on teaching, has begun to yield important distinctions between the teaching performances of more effective and less effective teachers. A concept known as Direct Instruction, with strong convergent validity in the process-product research literature, has important implications for the physical education teacher and teacher educator.

摘要:
Quality control of graduate physical education has been the sole responsibility of educational institutions offering such programs. Regional and national accrediting bodies have also guaranteed some standardization of programs. Now the profession of physical education, through the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), has launched a significant undertaking toward establishing its own specialized accreditation. This paper examines the need for such a model in graduate physical education, presents arguments for and against, and delineates directions taken by NASPE toward full implementation of accreditation.

摘要:
The alarmingly high turnover rate of administrators and the need to manage resources more effectively has prompted some university presidents to implement system-wide academic leadership programs. The purpose of such programs is to provide both cognitive and affective experiences for administrators to improve their overall efficiency. The present paper reviews many of the current problems associated with leadership and discusses some options for developing leadership within departments.

摘要:
The epistemic geography of physical education, which shows the sources from whence physical education draws its theory, is used as the basis for addressing the problem of theory and practice. The reciprocal relationship between theory and practice is discussed and shown schematically. That concept is applied to physical education to demonstrate and clarify the complexity of the problem. A number of suggestions are offered to help reduce the gulf that presently exists.

摘要:
Alan Ingham has criticized the prevailing positivist and blatantly ideological methodologies used in sport study and offered a Weberian alternative. This paper presents a different methodological approach; one based on a materialist understanding of the relationship between sport and society. By examining the totality as the real object of study and integrating the conception of dialectical analysis, it is argued that the labor process constitutes the ontological basis of social history and thus of sport study. Using labor as the take-off point, the paper illustrates in some detail how sport study can be integrated into the materialist framework. The final section discusses the ideal-type approach offered by Weber pointing out that it is a redundant methodological construct once the pivotal relations of social history have been identified. Finally, it is argued that the Weberian position also harbors certain ideological elements that often go unnoticed

摘要:
A number of scholars who are committed to the goal of broadening their understanding of cultures utilize hermeneutics, the study of interpretation, as a theoretical basis for the research methodologies which they employ. From the perspective of hermeneutics, both culture itself and the research processes by which culture is studied are considered to be constituted partially by shared meanings which are associated with interpretive processes involving social interaction. The present discussion focuses upon the nature and goals of hermeneutic cultural research and upon related problems concerning evaluation of the veracity of multiple interpretations of culture. Although hermeneutic cultural research is not free of criticism, studies concerning games and sports which have been carried out within this mode of investigation (two of which are illustrated here) indicate that this research process has good potential for use by scholars who wish to broaden their understanding of these phenomena.

摘要:
Play is frequently considered the basis of sport, and sport and dance are usually considered separate entities with little relationship to one another. In this paper a model is presented for conceptualizing sport and dance as a common phenomenon separate from the domains of psychology, sociology, history, biology, and geography. Performance is viewed as the basis of this shared relationship. Support is offered from the literature for viewing sport and dance as the performance of skill. Skill in an activity is considered a generic trait of sport and dance with levels of skill or ability a hierarchical, unique, and essential characteristic of the model. The levels within the model are beginner, intermediate, and advanced performance as we traditionally label our courses. Existentialism is offered as the philosophy underlying sport and dance. The purpose of the model is to propose that sport and dance be considered as a discrete domain with a body of knowledge upon which a theory of performance might be constructed. The paper is concluded by offering a common definition of sport and dance.

摘要:
The author speaks of insights for moving found in her practice of Zen: the disquiet one may perceive in performing the movement patterns of other cultures; the Japanese aesthetic as experienced in the Zen sesshin; the discovery of pushing past pain; the clarification found in her kensho (satori) experience for her ongoing investigation of the hypothesis that sport, dance, and exercise are contemplative forms. Although the accounts are highly individual, the author endeavors to place them within the wider realm of the experience of moving.
