AbstractFeeding régimes and feed analyses are reported for 55 dairy farms in Aberdeenshire during the winter of 1969–70. An assessment of the rations suggests that the most serious nutrient deficiency was in the energy supply to high‐yielding cows. Phosphorus intakes were also low, particularly of low‐yielding cows. AbstractPreparations of purified ovomucin complex have been obtained from samples of thick egg white which were liquefied during incubation at 37 °C under sterile conditions. Chemical analyses of the ovomucin complex and analytical ultra‐centrifugation of fully reduced derivatives of the ovomucin complex obtained from thick egg white thinned by incubation at 37 °C have shown that these preparations, unlike those obtained from “fresh” thick egg white, contained only small quantities of β‐ovomucin. AbstractEleven samples of lipid from cottons from different geographical locations have been examined by laminar chromatography. Every lipid contains the same 16 components and, although the proportions vary, the differences are not sufficiently large or consistent to enable the source to be identified. The chemical classes to which the major components belong have been determined.

AbstractA rapid, simple method for the determination of lactose in milk or milk products is described. An internal standard (galactose) is added to the milk which is then extracted with carbon tetrachloride. AbstractThe oxygen consumption rate (o.c.r.) of pre‐rigor beef muscle has been studied in relation to temperature and to the rates of ATP‐turnover (a.t.r.) and of mitochondrial oxidation (m.r.). The o.c.r. of strips of muscle has a constant enthalpy of activation (ΔH*) of 10–11 kcal/mol (Q10°C = 1.8) over the range of 2–38 °C. From 15–38 °C, the rate‐determining reaction is the resting turnover of ATP (a.t.r.) due to slow, undefined ATP‐hydrolases, which have an identical ΔH* value of about 10.5 kcal/mol. Below 11 °C, the phenomenon of cold‐shortening sets in, due to partial activation of the “contractile” myofibrillar ATPase as the temperature is lowered, with the result that the a.t.r. passes through a minimum at 5 °C, and at 1 °C has become as high as at 15 °C. Under these conditions the a.t.r. is too high for mitochondrial respiration to cope with the ADP produced, so that the m.r. increasingly becomes rate‐limiting.The o.c.r. and a.t.r. of pre‐rigor muscle are both increased by damage, strips showing rates about 2 times and minces about 4 times those given by intact tissue.The r.q. of beef muscle is 1, the substrate almost certainly being the pyruvate derived from glycolysis.The P:O ratio, derived from the observed a.t.r. and o.c.r., has a mean value of 2.8 in beef muscle and of about 2.3 in the muscles of the rabbit, sheep and pigeon. AbstractChicken (Gallus gallus) perineal, subcutaneous (leg), perinephric and pericardial adipose tissue and heart muscle triglycerides were subjected to stereospecific analysis. All were found to be asymmetric with a preponderance of saturated fatty acids in position 1 and a preponderance of unsaturated fatty acids in position 2. Position 1, for example, contained 48–55% saturated acids while position 2 contained 17–22% and position 3, 33–41%. AbstractThe absorption, distribution and excretion of [14C]‐ and [3H]pyrantel tartrate after oral administration to the sheep, ox, pig, dog and rat have been studied. Urinary excretion of radioactivity was greatest in the pig and the dog, accounting for approx. 34 and 40% of the dose respectively. Absorption was also good in the rat as indicated by some excretion of radioactivity in the bile. In the sheep and the ox approximately 60% of dose was excreted unchanged in the faeces, this probably representing unabsorbed rather than biliary‐excreted material. The highest tissue levels of radioactivity were found in the liver. Apart from the excretion of unchanged pyrantel in the faeces of the sheep and the ox, pyrantel was extensively metabolisedin vivointo many metabolites. None of these was identified, but degradation experiments showed that the thiophene ring had been extensively biotransformed and that the tetrahydropyrimidine ring was more resistant to metabolic att
