AbstractTetrakalai, the tetraploid form ofPhaseolus aureus, was studied in the fields of the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, in 1970, 1971 and 1972 to investigate its leaf protein yielding potentialities. In 1972 the yield of extracted leaf protein (LP) reached 458 kg/ha in 95 days, from harvests at 53 days along with the first regrowth cut. Of the two seed rates tried, 100 kg/ha, i.e. four times the conventional rate, gave a greater yield of protein than 50 kg/ha. Although not statistically significant, better protein yields were obtained with an increase in phosphate dose up to the 120 kg/ha level.

AbstractThe effect of nitrogen fertiliser application on the price of teas made in Malawi is quantified through the intermediate relationships of applied nitrogen upon shoot flavanol composition, and between manufactured tea theaflavin content and price. Combining the effect of fertiliser on price and yield allows estimates of the economically optimum level of application to be made. The effects of variations in physical relationships and of prices of tea and fertiliser are assessed.

AbstractThe effects of potasium deficiency and blotchy ripening in tomato fruit on some nitrogenous constituents, especially the proteins, have been investigated. The distribution of nitrogen in normal and potassium‐deficient fruit of the cherry tomatoLycopersicon pimpinellifoliumwas examined and compared with that from potassiumdeficient and blotchy ripened fruit of a cultivated variety (L. esculentum, cv. Moneymaker). The protein fraction from cv. Amberley Cross was analysed in detail using disc gel electrophoresis. Changes induced by potassium deficiency in the general protein pattern and on a wide range of enzymes active in ripening were compared with the effects brought about by blotchy ripening. The distribution of protein components and isoenzymes in low potassium fruit was to a large extent similar to that of normal tissue at an earlier stage of development, whereas the alterations in blotchy tissue appeared to be of a random natur

AbstractDuring the development of plants of the field bean (Vicia fabaL.) there was a rapid increase in protein, lignocellulosic material and total dry matter during a period extending from anthesis to a date 8 weeks later. Over the subsequent 10 weeks there was a much smaller increase in total protein and other components. The most important change during this period was a movement of nitrogen into the seeds. Throughout the experiment the major part of the total lignocellulosic material was associated with the stalks. AbstractDetailed measurements were made of the distributions of roots, water, nitrate, potassium and magnesium in the soil beneath summer cabbage that had been grown in the field for various periods of time. With few exceptions the concentration of water and nutrients did not vary with horizontal distance; the only detectable trends were in the concentrations of nitrate and potassium in the surface layer beneath large plants but these trends were much less than those of rooting density. The vertical distributions of nitrate and potassium ions were largely determined by rainfall which resulted in much loss of nitrate from the root zone and movement of potassium down the profile. Removal of water by evapotranspiration was more or less uniform down the profile despite rooting density declining sharply with depth. The significance of these findings to computer simulation of water and nutrient uptake by plants is discussed.

AbstractDry bulb onion (cv. Rijnsburger and Giant Zittau) were stored from September 1973 to late May 1974 at 2, 25°C and ambient temperature (mean 6°C). Flavour changes were monitored at intervals on freeze‐dried samples by determination of (a) pyruvate, (b) lachrymator (thiopropanalS‐oxide) and (c) g.l.c.‐headspace total peak areas. AbstractThe effects of different dietary oils superimposed on different levels of dietary protein on the rate of egg production, egg weight and egg hatchability and fertility in the tropics have been studied, using 405 layers and 81 breeding cocks all of the single comb White Leghorn x White Plymouth Rock breeds, over a period of 6 months. The oils were plam oil, groundnut oil and lard, and the three dietary protein levels were 14.4, 16.0 and 18.0%. Egg production rate was highest on the 3% palm oil diet superimposed on 18.0% protein diet and lowest on the 3% lard diet superimposed on 14.0% protein diet. There were significant increases in egg production rate as dietary protein levels increased and the differences due to oil types were also significant, being best for palm oil and poorest for lard diets. Feed/dozen eggs, the fertility and hatchability of the eggs laid, and the egg weights were also significantly influenced by oil types, and they all generally favoured palm oil diets, closely followed by groundnut oil diets. Lard significantly depressed egg production rate, egg weight, and egg hatchability and fertility. Protein levels significantly affected egg production rates, egg weight, feed/dozen eggs and egg fertility and hatchability.

AbstractThe influence of alfalfa saponins on growth and on lipid metabolism was studied in mice and quails. The extent of growth inhibition was related to the level of medicagenic acid in the saponin preparation used. Both species differed considerably in their sensitivity to alfalfa saponins, mice being more susceptible than qualis. Female mice overcame the growth impairing effect after a shorter period of adaptation than male mice. After ingestion of saponin both sexes showed an increase of faecal lipids and faecal cholesterol. Consequently concentrations of lipids and cholesterol in the livers of mice were depressed. In response to the lower uptake by the liver a higher rate of incorporation of labelled acetate into lipids and cholesterol of this organ was found. In quails these parameters of lipid metabolism were not influenced by alfalfa saponins, except for an increased rate of cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver.
