AbstractAn account is given of the difficulties encountered in applying an existing standard method of analysis of coal tar preparations to the separation of the constituents of certain fungicides used for treatment of rubber‐tree disease. The method which was developed to overcome these difficulties is described. The scheme of analysis involves the preliminary removal of water and formulating materials, using simple apparatus, and is followed by countercurrent extractions. Recovery of the separated groups of constituents appears to be good and will enable an assessment to be made of their contribution to the biological activity of the original material

AbstractThis paper is a Progress Report on the work of the Joint Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Association of British Insecticide Manufacturers on the determination of total mercury in organo‐mercurials. Consideration of the methods available and of the various types of product which might be encountered led to trials of selected methods on suitable mixtures; from this experience, the Committee developed a relatively simple method involving reduction with zinc in glacial acetic acid, filtration, dissolution of the zinc amalgam in nitric acid, and titration with thiocyanate. With minor modifications, the method is applicable t o samples containing benzene hexachloride or chalk; a further modification to cover samples containing lead arsenate and/or Prussian Blue is under investigation. The method has given reliable results for common types of product, with and without benzene hexachloride, but further work is necessary to cover other possible additive

AbstractLow‐temperature diffusion of sugar beets at 40° has many advantages compared with the hot diffusion process (70–80°). The juice prepared in the cold process contains less proteins than that from the hot process and the pulp obtained is of better quality, has a higher nutritional value and its quantity is larger. AbstractThe metabolizable energy values of 17 samples of cereals, cereal by‐products and mixed rations have been determined with laying hens. They ranged from 1300 to 3500 kg.‐cal. per kg. and, where comparison with the findings of other workers has been possible, agreement has been generally satisfactory. The same samples were subjected to the standard methods of proximate analysis, and also analysed for their content of starch and reducing sugars using a specially modified anthrone method. Statistical analysis of the results showed that the formula −53 + 38 (% crude protein + 2.25 × % ether extract + 1.1 × % starch + % sugar) gave predicted figures for the metabolizable energy (in kg.‐cal./kg.) of the materials tested with a standard deviation of ± 190 kg.‐cal./kg. from the determined figures. This was a superior prediction to any that could be made with the data from proximate analysis alone, and the method may prove of use when an estimate of the energy value of a material or mixture for feeding to poultry has to be made from results of chemical analyses that can be carried out in a routin
