摘要:
AbstractA preliminary account of on‐going life history research with a “mentally retarded” man is reported. At the time the subject was selected, he was identified by an official agency and by himself as “mentally retarded.” He had been living in group home facilities with other retarded people for 17 years. Midway in the first two years of interviewing, a battery of psychological tests were administered revealing, by such criteria, he was a well‐adjusted man of average intelligence. Discussion focuses on comparison of the alternative versions he constructed of his life experiences as a retarded person, before and after the disclosure that he was not mental

摘要:
AbstractIn previous work, the Training in Community Living program has been shown to be an effective and feasible mode of community treatment for markedly impaired patients. However, questions have been raised regarding its potential for dissemination to clinicál settings in communities other than Madison, Wisconsin. Described are successful experiences in consulting with three rural Wisconsin counties to help them establish community treatment programs modeled on Training in Community Living principles. Also described are the factors responsible for the success of these consultations

摘要:
AbstractThe relationship between race and psychiatric impairment was examined with regard to three measures of psychiatric status. Data on the Health Opinion Survey, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies‐Depression Scale, and the General Well‐Being Schedule collected on a rural Tennessee sample (n= 713) indicated a significant zero‐order relationship between race and impairment only for the depression index. No race differences were obtained when controls for SES‐related variables were instituted. The data support the recent suggestion that higher levels of impairment among blacks may be an artifact of social class s

摘要:
AbstractThis study of 200 adults receiving outpatient services in rural Middle Tennessee was conducted to provide data on the validity of the CES‐D as a measure of depressive symptomatology. Specifically, the study sought to determine the CES‐D's ability to discriminate between outpatients and a sample of community residents, between patient groups reflecting different diagnostic classifications and levels of problem severity, and based upon such comparisons, to select cutting points on the CES‐D which would indicate levels of depressive symptomatology which denote a need for services. The data indicated that the CES‐D distinguished (1) between patients and nonpatients, (2) among various patient groups, and (3) among depressed patients with varying levels of problem severity. Further, the study cites the utility of new cutting points of 17 and 23 to provide an estimate of “possible” and “probable” caseness within the community. The study provides support for the utility of the CES‐D in determining levels of depressive symptomatology

摘要:
AbstractTo examine the mental health status of children whose parents were foreign‐born and to determine if these youngsters have a special need for mental health services, this study compared the incidence of behavioral disturbance in 2,991 children who were native‐born and white with 97 children of immigrant parents. General information and ratings on a behavior problem checklist were obtained from teachers. Based upon an analysis of variance procedure, the results revealed that subjects of Chinese, Japanese, or Southeast Asian descent exhibited significantly fewer disorders, such as conduct problems and inadequacy‐immaturity, than children of native‐born

摘要:
AbstractThis study describes clients, therapists, treatment characteristics, and therapy outcomes for 551 consecutive, first‐time clients at two out‐patient mental health clinics. Significant improvement was found on target problems, global outcome ratings, and Hopkins Symptom Checklist scores for clients who mutually terminated therapy. The target problem and outcome ratings remained higher for this group than for dropouts at a six‐month follow‐up interview. Clients who improved most were those who were initially most uncomfortable and disturbed. Improvement was also strongly related to the number of therapy sessions. The implications of these and other results are di

摘要:
AbstractAn attempt was made to discover an effective therapeutic technique for dealing with an individual who calls a suicide prevention center a large number of times (the chronic caller). There were two objectives to such a technique: (1) to reduce the frequency of calls made by chronic callers to the suicide prevention service and (2) to persuade these individuals to become more specific when discussing their problem. The method chosen to accomplish these objectives consisted of assigning a specific counselor to each chronic caller, setting a one‐hour time limit with respect to each call and, having the suicide prevention center call the chronic caller instead of waiting for the chronic caller to contact the service. Results of the seven‐week treatment program indicated that prior to having the service call the chronic callers, the mean number of calls made per week, for the treatment and control group, were roughly equal. Upon completion of the treatment condition, the mean number of calls per week for those chronic callers who had received weekly calls from the service, was significantly less in comparison with those chronic callers who had not received weekly calls. This trend in the data was maintained during a 9‐week follow‐up condition. Self‐report measures obtained from the counselors indicated that the chronic callers were becoming more concrete and specific when discussing their particular problem. Suggestions regarding the manner in which other community mental health centers might implement a similar program are also

摘要:
AbstractAn experiment was conducted to determine the impact of behavioral training on psychiatric aides' endorsement of a psychosocial versus medical model. Following an eight‐week training program in behavior modification, experimental staff significantly changed their attitudes in a direction away from the “medical” model and towards the “psychosocial” orientation, relative to a no‐training control group. The findings were discussed in terms of the utility of such a measure for evaluating “behavioral community psychology

摘要:
AbstractAdministrators and middle managers from six CMHCs in Tennessee and Alabama were interviewed during site visits for the purpose of determining the main issues in mental health management. A step‐by‐step conceptual methodology was followed to process the field notes and interview responses. The views of a senior‐level management professor specializing in mental health management and a senior‐level professor in community psychology were used to further interpret and refine the results of this investigation. Although many diverse issues surfaced, an integrating theme emerged in the form of a need for management to motivate and inspire CMHC staff to a sense of

摘要:
AbstractThis article reports a study of referrals among social service and mental health agencies. Staff from human service agencies were interviewed about the process of referring and asked to make simulated referrals using mock clients constructed for this study. Interview data show lack of communication and inappropriate referrals as the biggest problems with the referral system. Interjudge agreement about the simulated referral choices was found to be not significantly different from chance. The data also suggest that agency staff refer on the basis of “habits” as much or more than on the basis of client problems. The frequency of inappropriate simulated referrals was relatively high (15%) considering that agencies included in the sample are large public agencies with broad definitions of what clients are appropriate for their services. Implications of these findings are discussed in terms of existing incentives for agencies to cooperate or compete and need for methodology to evaluate service delivery systems or netwo
