AbstractPrevention programs that require active involvement of community residents must stimulate awareness, interest, and participation in their activities. Disappointing participation in one such project, the Community Helpers Project, resulted in a telephone survey being conducted in order to distinguish lack of awareness from disinterest on the part of community residents. Two hundred residents in the project field sites were surveyed. The results showed that most residents were unaware of the project but that, upon learning about it, most expressed strong interest. These findings support the need for more systematic efforts to be made in the marketing of prevention programs.

AbstractThis case study analyzes an attempt to develop the ability of community organizations and groups to coordinate their efforts in implementing state legislation for the deinstitutionalization of status offenders. The intervention was carried out by a “networker,” whose responsibilities closely resembled those associated with the “ombudsman” role proposed by Sarason and Lorentz (1979). Using a strategy emphasizing locality development (Rothman, 1968), the networker organized community meetings where organizations concerned with the legislation were brought together for the purpose of resource exchange. A variety of collaborative projects involving shared resources resulted from these networking meetings. The implications of the intervention for developing community competence are discussed, with special attention being paid to the roles that intangible resources and commitment to the geographical community play in networking. AbstractThis study examines the structure of the role perceptions of self as deputy sheriff, average deputy, and ideal deputy and the effect of interpersonal relations training on those perceptions. Two‐day interpersonal relations training sessions were conducted in small groups for 177 courtroom deputy sheriffs. The sheriffs were assigned randomly to three conditions: pretraining testing, posttraining testing, and pre‐ and posttraining testing. Factor analyses revealed a consistent structure of three factors for all three role perceptions: an evaluation factor, a potency factor, and a machismo factor. Scores on the potency factor discriminated among ideal, self, and average role perceptions. Machismo factor scores declined after training for ideal and self role perceptions. AbstractThis article describes the development and operation of a secondary prevention program designed to reduce recidivism in a rural community. Rural communities present unique aspects such as geographic isolation, cultural values divergent from those of urban society, and limited professional resources that impact upon consultation and program development and that must be considered if implemented programs are to be utilized. Parameters of work in rural areas are described and discussed. Fifty‐five first offender participants in a community program that was developed through consultation to a rural juvenile court are compared with 177 cohort control subjects who appeared before the court prior to implementation of the program. AbstractThis article describes a neighborhood‐based program designed to enhance the child‐rearing roles, knowledge, and skills of parents of very young children. The program emphasizes the development of peer social networks and uses small discussion groups as its primary delivery system. The effort is based in a low‐income neighborhood in a Detroit suburb. The article describes the program's theoretical framework, design, and operations. Particular attention is given to the functioning of the parent groups. The article also examines program practices and experiences that appear to have been important in the development of a responsive relationship between the program's staff and its participants and the community. AbstractThe Basic Academic Skills Enhancement (BASE) program is described as an example of one research team's approach to the design, conduct, and implementation of a multilevel (i.e., primary and secondary) prevention program. Following presentation of the conceptual rationale for the program, BASE's evolution is discussed with regard to its specific personnel and setting characteristics. AbstractThe current third‐party fee‐for‐service mode of reimbursement for mental health services emphasizes individual, pathology‐oriented intervention and thus has disadvantages for clients and carriers. This article focuses on the mode's effects on outpatient services for children, youth, and families. It examines the ways in which common payment modes seriously limit services and create an incentive for psychologists to take a narrow, often nonempirical, perspective. Suggestions that allow for multisystem, ecological skill building hinge on building relationships between psychologists and the carriers.
