摘要:
AbstractBurnout has affected a significant number of professionals in research and in clinical practice. The Marxian theory of alienation is insufficient to account for the phenomenon among professional workers. A critical factor in professional alienation is, paradoxically, the very factor which distinguishes the professional from the layman, namely the reliance on method and concept to develop knowledge. The alienating character of professional method may be observed in varying degrees in all human service professions. Method alienates the professional from the subject matter of interest, and to some degree from his or her own perceptions and interests. In the course of attempting to solve problems, too often the emphasis changes from understanding the substantive problem to checking and correcting artifacts of method, losing the focus on the original substantive problem, as the work turns in on itself. The cure requires professional social support for studies better suited to illuminate the human condition and to enlighten and intrigue the professional worker.

摘要:
AbstractOver the past few years a diverse group of community‐oriented individuals from academic and applied settings has scheduled regular meetings at different universities. This group, officially called the Midwestern Eco‐Community Psychology Interest Group, has provided an important source of support to individuals with community interests. The present paper describes the evolution of this group and presents survey data suggesting that this developing network has successfully facilitated the exchange of resources and information among members. The implications of these findings for developing networks for community psychologists are discus

摘要:
AbstractThis research was designed to examine the cognitive and affective responses of residential dwellers in the aftermath of a natural disaster (a flood). In a 2 × 3 factorial design, the effects of fear (High, Medium, and Low) and sex on perceptions of the disaster were assessed. The results indicated that respondents who were highly fearful of the disaster were more likely than moderate or low fear respondents to believe that: a) additional flooding would occur in their vicinity, and b) that they resided closer to the flood zone than they actually did. The policy implications of the results suggested that post‐disaster mental health services might have to be extended to include residents of geographical areas not directly affected by natural or man‐made disas

摘要:
AbstractDifferences in perception between college student aides' and teachers' judgments of a child's problems, and how well they know and like the child, were investigated. The AML and CARS scales were used by both teachers and aides to evaluate three‐ and four‐year‐old children referred to a preschool mental health project. Statistically significant differences were found between teachers' and aides' perceptions, with the aides being generally more positive in their assessments of the children. To the extent that a positive perception of a child may be more conducive to a positive intervention effect, use of college student aides appears to increase the potential for positive change in a

摘要:
AbstractDocumentation of results of treatment in the community mental health centers is necessary in order to maintain the continuation of funding. Short‐term treatment of children in such a setting was examined along with its effects on one parent in the family. The sample consisted of 241 children and 222 parents. An adaptation of the National Center of Health Statistics General Well‐Being Scale was used in order to assess change in children and parents. There were significant increases in general well‐being in both groups. The parents, as well as the children, benefited from therapy, regardless of whether or not they, themselves, received any treatment. Therefore, therapeutic intervention in one family member has been shown to have an effect on at least one other family m

摘要:
AbstractThe recent (1980) immigration of 125,000 Cubans to the U. S. presented health workers with a situation bearing many of the characteristics of a disaster. Some of the organizational, clinical, and ecological issues which are inherent in providing mental health care in disaster situations are discussed. Ultimately, the development of an effective response to the situation depended on an understanding not only of the individuals involved, but also on an appreciation for the characteristics of the different phases of disaster situations.

摘要:
AbstractThe potential benefits to be derived by increasing the participation of community psychologists and students in alternative counseling centers are discussed. A definition of the termAlternative counseling centeris presented and a philosophical similarity between community psychologists and the founders of alternative counseling centers is then outlined. The contributions that community psychology and alternative counseling centers can make to each other's growth are enumerated. One possible model for rapproachement is offered and a direction for future trends in this area is suggested.

摘要:
AbstractA unique bilingual interpreter program aimed at expanding professional services to Spanish‐speaking patients is described. Bilingual‐bicultural community aides were trained to interpret for monolingual Spanish‐speaking patients and non‐Spanish‐speaking therapists. Training emphasis and experiences with therapists and patients over a 5‐year period are discussed. Particular benefits and difficulties encountered with the therapist‐interpreter team approach
