AbstractFollowing a critical review of halfway house outcomes studies, the authors concluded that the effectiveness of halfway houses in facilitating the independent functioning of psychiatric clients in the community is open to question. It appears that because major deficiencies in the areas of autonomous atmospheres, employment training and community adjustment are often concealed by limitations in statistical indices of success. Further research is necessary before more definitive conclusions can be drawn related to the effectiveness of psychiatric halfway houses. Specific, suggested requirements for future research efforts are presented.

AbstractThis paper develops the assumptions that underlie a transactional approach to psychotherapy by utilizing Bentley's ideas about the environed organism. It emphasizes that not only is interpersonal interaction significant therapeutically but the situational aspect of persons and behavior (living, working, neighborhood, and community circumstances) contribute to the process of client change and growth.

The question raised is seen to be: How do we justify including the person‐as‐cause in a meaningful theory of behavior? AbstractNassi's (1978) article argues that mental health professionals, through their control of services, are more responsive to their own than to community needs. She suggests that more direct control of CMHC policy and practices by residents would make professionals more accountable to those being served. Who controls the bureaucracy is important, but the key problems with CMHCs, as with other human services, is that they have taken over most functions of caring. AbstractQuestionnaire and personality data were collected from a sample of 23 women who responded to four different letters and subsequently joined a women's counseling service group, and from a sample of 31 nonresponding women. Respondents who joined groups reported significantly lower self‐acceptance scores, higher educational levels, and more positive attitudes towards the women's movement than did non‐respondents. Of the 50 women who telephoned in response to a letter, 27 did not eventually join a group. Responses for the subgroup of 23 joiners as well as total responses for all 50 who telephoned were evenly distributed among the four letter treatments. However, women who responded and joined groups after receiving the two letters which indicated that their problems were “common to most women” scored higher on the FIRO‐B “inclusion” scales than did women who joined groups after responding to the two other letters. AbstractThe Problem‐Oriented System (POS) provides systematic guidelines for health care record keeping. Behavioral therapy records share, with health care records in general, a quality of inadequacy for contemporary needs. Likewise, behavior therapy training shares with other health care training inadequate attention to record‐keeping. This conclusion arises from a search of recent journals and books concerned with behavior therapy issues. This article reviews the POS and proposes that its guidelines and advantages are suited for incorporation into behavioral therapy training. The expected result of such training should be records more amenable to audit or review for such purposes as third party payment, supervision, and peer review.
