Abstract1. The widely disjunct distribution patterns of the ratite birds and the southern beechesNoithofagus, as well as the apparently anomalous presence of the primitive frogLeiopelmain the New Zealand archipelago, are usually interpreted as due to the fragmentation of pan Austral biota distributed over the ancient southern supercontinent Gondwana. The distribution patterns of these taxa and their relatives are re‐examined using Croizat's panbiogeographic method.2. The biogeography of the New Zealand frog genusLeiopelmaand its relatives is discussed in detail. These frogs are shown to exhibit a trans‐Pacific biogeographic pattern rather than a trans‐Antarctic, Gondwanan or Pangaean biogeographic pattern as claimed by vicariance theorists.3. Analysis of the geographic distributions ofNothofagus‐Fagusand the ratite birds through the construction and orientation of biogeographic tracks for these taxa is discussed in detail. The geographic distribution ofNothofagus‐Fagusis shown to be biogeographically homologous with that ofLeiopelmaand its relatives because both groups of taxa display trans‐Pacific tracks. In contrast the ratite birds have trans‐Atlantic Ocean and trans‐Indian Ocean tracks.4. The geographic sympatry of the ratite birds,Nothofagusand leiopelmatid frogs in eastern Australasia and southern South America is due to the composite geological nature of these areas. The relationship between the polyphyletic nature of New Zealand as a geological taxon and biogeography is discussed.

AbstractIn an attempt to reconstruct the phylogeny of the higher gastropods, the essential characters are first critically examined to determine occurrence and systematic value. From here the evolutionary pathway is cladistically analysed from a common prosobranch ancestor up to the basal pulmonates. A new classification according to (but not identical with) the reconstructed cladogram is presented. The “Opisthobranchia” are shown to be a stage group and are thus divided in: Architectibranchia (Acteonoidea, Ringiculoidea, Diaphanoidea), Eleutherobranchia (Notaspidea, Nudibranchia, Anthobranchia, Smeagolida), and Tectibranchia (Bullomorpha, Acochlidiomorpha, Aplysiomorpha, Saccoglossa, Thecasomata, Gymnosomata). Together with the Gymnomorpha (Onchidiida, Soleolifera, Rhodopida) and the Pulmonata they are united in the Pentaganglionata (nov. = Euthyneura), which are mainly characterized by the presence of two additional (= parietal) ganglia; in contrast, euthyneury is a phenomenon of convergence. Because of several primitive characters (streptoneury, pallial gonoduct) the Architectibranchia are regarded as most primitive Pentaganglionata. The Allogastropoda (Architectonicoidea, Pyramidelloidea, Nerineoidea), characterized by a special secondary gill, are (as Triganglionata) a sistergroup of the Pentaganglionata. Both are united in the Heterobranchia, which are mainly characterized by a hyperstrophic protoconch, spiral sperm and special egg‐connections (chalazae). The taxon “Heterogastropoda”, used very differently in the past, is shown to be diphyletic and is divided into Heteroglossa (suborder of Caenogastropoda, including Cerithiopsoidea, Triphoroidea, Epitonioidea, Eulimoidea) and Allogastropoda. The Rissoelloidea (Rissoellidae, Omalogyridae) are a connecting link between marine taenioglossan prosobranchs and the heterobranchs. With the latter they share the loss of the ctenidium and its substitution by two ciliary tracts (water currents) and a pallial kidney (respiration).ZusammenfassungDie Heterobranchia — ein neues Konzept zur Phylogenie der höheren GastropodenMit dem Ziel, die Phylogenie höherer Gastropoden zu rekonstruieren, werden zunächst alle wesentlichen Merkmale einer kritischen Analyse unterzogen, urn Verteilung and systematische Signifikanz festzustellen.

AbstractOver 200 specimens ofArion hortensiss. 1. and A.intermediuswere surveyed for general esterase patterns in hepatopancreas homogenates by means of isoelectric focusing. Zymograms were compared with the band counting method. The counts were used to calculate genic similarities. Ananovawas employed to test differences among the calculated similarities. Five major conclusions could be drawn from this analysis.1.A. hortensiss. s.,A. distinctusandA. owenii, three species which until recently were lumped together asA. hortensiss. 1., constitute three clearly different gene pools. Hence they are reproductively isolated and may be regarded as biological species.2. InA. hortensiss. s. andA. distinctusthere is a gradual decline in genic similarities from intrapopulation pairs over conspecific pairs from different populations to interspecific comparisons. This fact confirms the genetic isolation between both species.3. No comparable gradual decrease of genic similarities could be detected amongA. oweniiandA. intermedius, since both species revealed constant and nearly uniform (monomorphic) esterase patterns. Hence both species are assumed to reproduce by self‐fertilization or apomictic parthenogenesis, whereasA. hortensiss. s. andA. distinctusare true outcrossing species showing very polymorphic zymograms. InA. oweniia mixed breeding system is suggested since in this species spermatophores and mating behaviour have been observed.4. No evidence was found for splittingA. distinctusin its two genitalial forms. Consequently the presence or absence of an eversible portion in the oviduct is not completely reliable for separatingA. distinctusfrom both other species and so only the structure around the outlet of the epiphallus in the atrium can be used to distinguish the three siblings.5. In view of the high similarity betweenA. oweniiandA. intermediusand considering chromosome numbers as well as genitalial features, it is concluded thatA. intermediusis more conveniently placed in the same subgenus asA. hortensiss. 1., i. e.Kobeltia. 1. in dasselbe SubgenusKobelti

AbstractClassification of flamingos (Phoenicopteriformes) by comparative analysis of their uropygial gland secretionsThe systematic position and the internal classification of the flamingos (Phoenicopteriformes) are discussed with regard to the composition of the uropygial gland secretion as a biochemical character. This composition indicates relationships of the flamingos to wading birds (Charadriiformes), especially to the gulls (Laridae), to ducks (Anseriformes) and loons (Gaviiformes). It is, therefore, supposed that all of them are of a common origin. The flamingos, however, should not be combined with one of these orders. The three generaPhoenicopterus, PhoeniconaiasandPhoenicoparruscannot be distinguished by their preen wax composition. With the exception ofPh. jamesi, which diverges from all the remaining species, an identical type of wax occurs in all flamingos. The small qualitative and quantitative differences confirm the close relation betweenPh. ruber ruberandPh. ruber roseusas well as between them andPh. chilensis.

AbstractConvergent evolution in bipedal rodents has been studied using multivariate analysis of morphological features of their hindlimb. Bipedal and quadrupedal representatives of four rodent families were dissected. Although there are certain basic morphological trends associated with the evolution of bipedal saltation in rodents, the species differ from one another significantly in the degree to which these trends are embodied. It is likely that only a combination of explanations can account for the differences in degrees of specializations associated with bipedal saltation in rodents. Similarities in animals as different in leaping abilities as zapodids and dipodids reflect the role of genetic factors. Extreme differences in habitat, particularly those related to aridity, have almost certainly played a major role.A general sequence of events could have been as follows. Selection pressures for bipedal saltation elicited the appearance of the basic morphological features, which are biomechanically essential for this mode of locomotion. From this point, the specific features characterizing bipedality in a group were determined by genetic make‐up, the nature of the particular habitat, and, possibly, the length of time evolution along these lines took place.
