SummaryIt is argued that the frequently encountered view that phylogenetic trees form a direct representation of the evolving generations, or represent the flow of DNA and, consequently, specify ancestor‐descendant relationships, is incorrect. Phylogenetic trees are not a direct representation of a part of the tree of life but only reflect inferred genealogical relationships. It is not considered necessary for phylogenetic trees to have particular ancestral taxa on the nodes.Because Hennig(1966) also thought in terms of the tree of life, he formulated a number of inconsistencies (deviation rule and process of species splitting) which have been eliminated by himself and practicioners of his phylogenetic method. Consequently, these specific statements cannot be considered an integral part of phylogenetic principles.Discussions on paraphyletic taxa are only possible when one adheres to the, incorrect, view that phylogenetic trees represent part of the tree of life. Paraphyletic taxa are not definable by unique characteristics and, therefore, cannot be part of genealogical tree diagrams or classifications. In evaluating the practical applications of classifications or phylogenetic trees, it appears that only cladograms may form the basis of historical biogeographical studies.

SummaryApplication of the principles of cladistics, or phylogenetic systematics, to the class Diplopoda indicates monophyly (in the strict sense) of the taxa Penicillata, Pentazonia, Colobognatha (minusSiphoniulus?), Nemathophora, Merocheta, and Juliformia. The result agrees with traditional classifications but stands in contrast to the classification by Hoffman(R. L. Hoffman, 1979: Classification of the Diplopoda. 237 pp. Muséum d'Histoire naturelle, Genève). At higher levels, the analysis indicates strict monophyly of the taxa Diplopoda, Chilognatha, Helminthomorpha, and Eugnatha. The following sister‐group relationships are proposed:Penicillata – ChilognathaPentazonia – HelminthomorphaColobognatha (minusSiphoniulus?) – EugnathaThe interrelationships of the eugnathan groups: Nematophora, Merocheta and Juliformia, remain unsettled, as does the position ofSiphoniulus.A formal classification expressing the results is presented.

SummaryOn the taxonomy, biogeography and evolution of South American Meinertellidae (Machiloidea, Archaeognatha, Insecta)The geographical distribution of the Meinertellidae and especially of the 5 South American genera (Kuschelochilis, Machilinus, Machiloides, Meinertellus, Neomachilellus) is described and discussed. The characteristics which are important for identification at family and genus level are dealt with, and the Meinertellidae are classified as a derived group. The family is concentrated in the tropics and the southern hemisphere. In South America and the Notogäa Meinertellidae are the only representatives of Archaeognatha. The widely spread generaMachilinusandMachiloidesinhabit only the southern tip of South America each with relatively few endemic species. On the other hand the generaMeinertellusandNeomachilelluswere able to penetrate the tropical rain forest and to produce a multitude of species. In order to explain the present distribution of Meinertellidae we assume a centre of evolution in the region of actual Europe, a transgression of the equator and with a view to the occurrence ofNeomachilellusin the Eastern USA a dispersal over water. The systematic position of the two species ofNeomachilellusoccuring in tropical Africa (N. lamtoensisandN. nimbensis) is discussed.

AbstractPopulations that were designed for studying the migration ofsepia, Est–6–S, andAdh‐Salleles into populations ofDrosophila melanogastercontaining the wild‐type allele ofsepiaand the fast alleles of the two allozyme loci have provided exceptionally clear data on linkage relationships. SeEst‐6‐S‐bearing second chromosomes (the two loci are separated by 10.8 map units) introduced into wild‐type populations containing only theEst‐6‐Fallele remained in linkage disequilibrium in generation 24:se F and se Scombinations occurred with equal frequency; +Fand +Scombinations had frequencies of 0.75 and 0.25.SeandAdh‐Salleles (located on different autosomes) introduced into wild‐type populations containing only theAdh‐Fallele had attained linkage equilibrium by the 24th generation. The frequency of [se F] and [+ F]gametes was 0.75; that of [se S] and [+ S]gametes was 0.25. The disequilibrium involving the linked loci is discussed in terms of 1. the strong selection known to favorsepiaheterozygotes in these populations and 2. the possible inability of initial linkage patterns to break down through recombination because of insufficient time.

Summary556 specimens of fire‐bellied toads (Bombina bombinaandB. variegata) were collected at 17 localities in Lower Austria and the Burgenland. 18 colour pattern characters and genotypes at two marker loci were recorded for all individuals. In 212 toads from 11 populations electrophoretic variation at 12 protein loci, the index L/T and the pigmentation of testes were studied. According to measurements all specimens were diploid. Five enzyme loci (Ldh‐l, Mdh‐1, Idb‐1, Aat, Adk) had alternate alleles fixed in species.Utilizing these genetic markers a zone of allopatric hybridization betweenB. bombinaandB. variegatewas discovered in the eastern part of the Waldviertel. Alleles from either species pre‐dominate clearly in each of the populations within this zone, but most of the individuals found there are of hybrid origin. The observed pattern of differential introgression is not consistent with the dynamic‐equilibrium hypothesis of maintenance of hybrid zones by gene flow, but points to stabilization of largely isolated hybrid populations.Introgression of alien alleles was also revealed inB. bombinafrom the Danubian Valley and inB. variegatafrom the Viennese Woods. Fünf Enzymloci (Ldb‐1, Mdh‐1, Idh‐1, Aat, Adk) Wiesen art

SummaryRecently collected material (five specimens from Ulu Gombak, Malaysia) shows thatPipistrellus societatisHill 1972 has to be considered as a lowland form of P.circumdatusTemminck 1840. Chromosomal analysis (2n = 50, FN = 48) and examination of the baculum prove thatPipistrellus circumdatushas to be placed in the genusEptesicus. Karyological and morphological differences of the generaVespertilio, PipistrellusandEptesicusare discussed. Extension of the definitions of these genera is proposed, taking into consideration karyological characteristics and the form of the baculum. The number of premolars is considered less significant. ZusammenfassungVon 25 Wildmeerschweinchen (Cavia aperea) and 37 Hausmeerschweinchen (C.a. f. porcellus) wurden die intraspezifischen Beziehungen zwischen Hirngewicht and Bruttokörpergewicht ermittelt. SummaryChanges of brain weight from wild to domestic guinea pigStudied was the intraspecific relation between brain weight and total bodyweight in 25 wild cavies (Cavia aperea) and 37 guinea pigs (C.a. f. porcellus). A common allometric exponent of a = 0.207 for the two groups and a reduction in brain weight of 13.43% from wild to domestic guinea pigs were observed. There was found to be a relationship between intensity of reduction in brain weight of domestic rodents and the level of cephalization oftheir ancestral s
