摘要:
&NA;STAGES OF ANESTHESIA–Inhalation anesthesia is divided into four stages.Chart Irepresents the relative duration of these stages, estimated from the time required to carry anesthesia progressively through them all. The relative duration of these stages, as charted, is constant with all agents, although the time required to pass through them all varies greatly with various agents and under various conditioons. Roughly, these times are as shown on Chart 1.

摘要:
&NA;THE POSSIBILITY that anesthesia may be induced in plants is not a new idea. Bernard1 discovered in 1878 that Mimosa pudica, the sensitive plant, lost its irritability when subjected to ether fumes. This served as additional evidence to establish a physiological relationship between protoplasm of members of the plant and animal kingdom. Since most observations on anesthesia in animals involves the nervous system, close analogies with plants cannot be drawn, for plants have no nerves. There are, however, a number of ways that plants can exhibit responses to anesthetics, especially the unsaturated carbon gases.

摘要:
&NA;IN AUGUST, 1916, Adrian Stokes1used a rubber tube placed in the nose to supply oxygen to soldiers gassed with combined phosgene and chlorine gas. Since then, techniques for the insufflation of oxygen by nasal catheter have been enthusiastically recommended as efficient, and quite as often vigorously criticized as inefficient, this report follows a study undertaken to further substantiate the repeated assertion5 7that adequate oxygen therapy can be administered by catheter insufflation, and that the oxygen tension of inspired gases depends not only on the rate of flow but more particularly upon employment of proper technique in placing the catheter.

摘要:
&NA;FROM THE FORMATION of the word, we would expect to find that aldehyde had been named by the Arabian alchemists. On the contrary, the drug is of comparatively recent discovery and was named by Liebig, who contracted the name alcohol‐de‐hydrogenatum to aldehyde. Aldehyde is prepared from alcohol by the action of manganese dioxid and sulphuric acid gently heated together. Paraldehyde is formed by polymerization or the linking together of three molecules of aldehyde and is prepared by adding a small proportion of pure sulphuric acid to acetaldehyde.

&NA;THIS PAPER has a two‐fold aim.First, to present a statistical study of the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications on thesurgical service of St. John's Hospital during the two year period beginning November 1932 and ending October 1934.secondto give a critical analysis of our experience with carbon dioxid postoperative hyperventilations as the specific preventive for this type of complication.

摘要:
&NA;ALL ANESTHETIC AGENTS are poisons. No matter what the anesthetic agents, nor by which avenue they are administered, nor how skillfully given, they are poisons just the same. This leads us to three things for consideration: (1) The Safest Avenue of Administration; (2) The Best Technique of Administration; (3) The Safest Anesthetic Agent or the Safest Anesthesia.

摘要:
&NA;THE SUBARACHNOID ARTERIAL and venous circulations. according to Weed1, are actually invaginated within the cerebrospinal arachnoid circulation. The main and larger arteries of the brain and cord enter bilaterally and anteriorly and subsequently branch to enter the cortical subarachnoid around these organs. The lesser arteries send branches through arachnoid channels into the brain and cord proper. This statement in no way abrogates the postulates of others in regard to the partial origin of spinal or cerebral fluid by osmosis, filtration, transudation or dialysis.

摘要:
&NA;IN SEARCHING THE LITERATURE back to January 1930, I have failed to find any reference to the use of splanchnic block in essential hypertension. While I have had the opportunity of treating only a few cases by nerve block, yet the results have been encouraging enough to continue the treatments. I am presenting this paper in the hope of eliciting discussion, from which some suggestions might be gleaned for the continuation of this study, or in the hope that someone else has worked on this problem in a similar way, but has not yet reported his results.

摘要:
&NA;THE PROBLEM TO WHICH we have addressed ourselves is somewhat far‐reaching in its implications, and is one concerning which there has been, and still is, considerable confusion. For instance, Addison's disease in its early stages is indistinguishable clinically from advanced types of recessive status lymphaticus. Yet, as commonly regarded, the two are neatly pigeon‐holed as distinct disorders, and not usually thought of as essentially identical, differing from each other only in degree. One difficulty which prevents general acceptance of a correct conception is that recessive status lymphaticus varies in its manifestations at different ages, and in different individuals of the same age.
