摘要:
&NA;INTRODUCTION OF ANESTHESIA and anesthetic methods into obstetrics in civilized countries was accomplished only after an opposition which was characterized by the denseness of its ignorance and the vehemence of its religious intolerance. Two names in particular are associated with this long and important struggle, and these are James Y. Simpson, of Edinburgh, and Walter Channing, of Boston.

摘要:
&NA;WISH TO THANK the Executive of the International Anesthesia Research Society, and especially our energetic Secretary, Dr. McMechan, for the honor they have done me– firstly, because they have officially confered on me the title of anesthetist, to which perhaps I have some small right, as I have anesthetized patients in the old days when anesthesia was not an art, and have anesthetized more animals perhaps, than many of you have human beings and used more varied anesthetic procedures than most of you have employed; and secondly, because the Society has, in my person, recognized the research work from my laboratory and by my colleagues, of whom I would mention Dr. W. Easson Brown and Prof. G. H. W. Lucas.

摘要:
&NA;THE PROGRESS IN MEDICAL SCIENCE and its effect in lengthening human life in the past hundred years has shown no greater advance than in that branch of medicine known as anesthesiology. Modern surgery owes its very existence to it–the prolonged and intricate operative procedures of the present day are made not only possible but safe by the physiologic and psychic protection of anesthesia. The long record of “man's inhumanity to man” is surely somewhat balanced by the merciful obliteration of pain, for which anesthesia must be credited.

摘要:
&NA;PAIN, AT ONE and THE same time, is man's most kindly friend and his most malign enemy. Pain is our best friend, because it warns us of disease; it tells us there is something wrong with the human machine; it takes us to the physician for relief. Pain is our basest enemy; because, if unassuaged, it plunges us into the gloomiest depths, even unto dissolution and death. High or low, rich or poor, strong or weak, unmitigated pain levels us all, and its control or banishment would confer on mankind the most Euphrosyne joy.

摘要:
&NA;WRITERS ON SPINAL ANESTHESIA have very generally stressed its lack of effect on the vital organs of the body. Its lack of effect upon the lungs is one of the reasons why they have advocated its use in preference to that of ether, especially when pulmonary complications might be anticipated. This reasoning seems logical because ether is irritant to the respiratory tract, tends to increase the secretions and, in any considerable depth, at least, abolishes the reflexes which guard the glottis.

摘要:
&NA;THE FREQUENCY WITH WHICH new anesthetic drugs and novel techniques of administration appear in the medical press is press is becoming bewildering, but it is comparatively rare that much real advance is made over existing and well‐tried An exception, however, appears to have occurred in the introduction of percaine, for this substance has certain properties which are so far unique among local analgesics.1

摘要:
&NA;IN THIS ADDRESS we shall try to sum up the work on the pharmacology of avertin with which we have been engaged for some time. Some of our observations have just been published in theJournal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics;others will, we hope, be published soon. Time will not permit our mentioning much of the work of others. We can only refer to the papers in which our work is or will be published in detail for other references.

摘要:
&NA;THE NEED OF INTENSIVE STUDY of alternative anesthetic agents and methods is imperative. Only large series of cases will suffice if adequate data are to be obtained and conclusions with any degree of accuracy formulated. Tabulation of results suitable for comparison and evaluation is difficult. If some hundreds or thousands of values of a variable have been noted merely in the arbitrary order in which they occurred, the mind cannot grasp the significance of the record.

摘要:
&NA;ABOUT FIFTEEN YEARS AGO the Dental Profession came to a crossroad in that two outstanding and meritorious events had happened. (1) Block anesthesia had been introduced and was being widely accepted by the Dental Profession. (2) The Surgical or open view operation for the removal of teeth came into practice. Since then these two methods of practice have come down through the years hand in hand, developing as time goes on finer and more skilled operators on the oral tissues, with all the refinements of asepsis and surgery that had been unheard of in the past.

&NA;CONVINCED OF THE GREAT SERVICE that would be rendered to the members of our profession if, one and all, they would employ nitrous oxid as their anesthetic in dental operations both large and small, I ask your permission to make a few remarks on this subject.
