摘要:
&NA;AS FAR as the general inhalation anesthetics are concerned there has not yet been a systematic effort to determine whether or not there is any relation between chemical constitution and physiological action by the chemical synthesis and pharmacological study of a relatively large series of related compounds. The chlorinated methanes (chloroform and carbon‐tetra‐chlorid), the alkyl ethers (methyl‐ethyl ether, and di‐ethyl ether), and the unsaturated hydrocarbons (ethylene, acetylene, and propylene) suggests the possibility of work along this line.

摘要:
&NA;THE OBJECT of this paper will be to discuss the control of oxygen and carbon dioxid in so far as such control can be brought into the hands of the practical anesthetist to the advantage of patient and surgeon. Nature has provided that animal shall take from the atmosphere what oxygen is needed to support metabolism discharging the resulting carbon dioxid into the atmosphere.

摘要:
&NA;MUCH OF THE value of this great meeting of doctors from all Parts of the English‐speaking countries of the world must lie in the opportunity which is afforded for us to understand the point of view from which each of us regards his work. We read of new methods as they are reported in the medical journals, and we try them out, or else perhaps we disregard them as unattractive. Often a new method is extolled far beyond its actual merits, and, in the consequent reaction, it may fall into complete disuse. Or, perhaps, we find a satisfactory method and we fall into the habit of employing it as a routine, with the result that in a certain case we may neglect a procedure which would be more helpful for that particular patient's operation, diathesis, disease, or mental attitude. It is the intention of this paper to show how, by a wise selection of methods, the anesthetist may collaborate with the obstetric surgeon to make his work more effective and the safety of the patient more secure.

摘要:
&NA;THE VARIOUS FORMS of general anesthetics used for the abolition of operative pain have a twofold injurious effect on the patient: Injury to the vital functions or injury to the psychic element. The former naturally threatens the life of the organism in a greater measure than the latter, and, therefore, all attention is directed by the physician and anesthetist toward the objective injuries of the vital functions and that anesthetic is chosen which seems to be the least harmful in this respect.

摘要:
&NA;THE EMPLOYMENT of oxygen as a therapeutic agent in any case where there is anoxemia, should almost be mandatory. The indications for employing it are so many and so varied, and the results have been so gratifying, that it appears strange it is not used oftener. Oxygen was discovered in 1774 by Priestly in England and Scheele in Sweden. It is known to have been used empirically almost from the time of its discovery for various ailments, and then discontinued. Shoemaker in his Materia Medica states that while oxygen has never been accepted in the U. S. Pharmacopeia, it is a remedy of considerable therapeutic value, and as an antidote to certain forms of poisoning is indispensable to the recovery of the patient.

摘要:
&NA;IN PRESENTING to this organization a technique for the removal of tooth impactions under general anesthesia I have in mind a procedure which by its simplification has made it possible for those who have taken up the work to spare themselves the expenditure of much physical and mental stress and their patients a lessened amount of anesthetic and surgical shock resulting from shortening the operative period. Any technique which makes these principles its aim should, I belive, be given a hearing, and I appreciate the privilege accorded me by your illustrious leader, Dr. F. Hoeffer McMechan.
