ABSTRACT.Pooled findings from 21 early intervention demonstration studies for Down's syndrome infants and children yield consistency of short‐term benefits in the growth of liner motor skills, simple social repertoire and DQ/IQ scores, hut conflicting evidence in support or not of benefits in the gross motor, linguistic and cognitive/ academic domains. Support for the tenacity of gains, on follow‐up to the early years of primary schooling, is disappointing. It is recommended that: (1) intervention programmers view the key working assumptions and ideological positions governing present practices more critically; (2) intervention curricula reflect the unique biological and behavioural properties of the syndrome, taking into account individual differences which are independent of etiological label; and (3) care delivery systems be based more fully on multidisciplinary collaboration, especially between the health sciences and education fie

ABSTRACT.The testicular volumes (V) of 817 adult (non‐Down's syndrome) institutionalized males were calculated. The mean testicular volume was 19.5±15.8 ml, comparable to the normal adult male mean of 17–19 ml. However, the number of institutionalized males with V≤25 ml and V≤10 ml was increased approximately fourfold over the normal male population. ABSTRACT.This study extends an operant methodology for the analysis of variables which control aberrant responses displayed by mentally handicapped people. The proportion of time spent in individual, stereotyped topographies by three profoundly mentally handicapped subjects was observed by momentary time‐sampling whilst they were repeatedly exposed to four analogue environments: Alone, Social Disapproval, Academic Demand and Unstructured Play. Two of the three subjects showed replicable effects of the analogue environments. One subject showed evidence of an interaction between stereotyped topography and type of analogue environment. This study shows that the operant methodology of Iwataet al.(1982), originally developed with self injurious responses, can be successfully refined and extended to the analysis of a wider range of aberrant topographie

ABSTRACT.Open‐ended interviews were conducted with 12 people with a mental handicap who had left parental homes in order to live as tenants in community residential hostels. Parents and hostel staff were also interviewed. The nature of life in the family home, and the tenant's role in the move, reasons for leaving home and expectations for the future were explored. It was found that social life, autonomy and opportunities to develop self‐help skills had been limited at home. The tenants who had the widest social experience and the greatest use of self‐help skills at home were the most active in changing their situation. ABSTRACT.From 1976 to 1984, there were 149 Down's syndrome live births in Western Australia. Where previously the coexistence of congenital heart disease was a major determinant of early mortality, current survival rates do not reflect this. Survival rates have significantly increased over the last decade: particularly so for those with coexistent congenital heart disease. Projected frequencies for Down's syndrome persons in Western Australia are expected to significantly increase. This rise in prevalence will have major economic effects on the planning and delivery of health care for this population.
