AbstractA case of squamous cell carcinoma arising in a cystic duplication within the small bowel mesentery of a 65‐yr‐old man is described. The cyst wall had a double layered smooth muscle coat with intervening ganglionic plexus; part of the cyst was lined by ciliated columnar epithelium.Twelve previously reported cases of carcinoma arising in duplications are reviewed together with the present case. In all but one case, the onset of symptoms was probably related to malignant change; the age at presentation ranged from 26 to 65 yrs. Pre‐operative diagnosis proved difficult, and led to a delay in the appropriate treatment of some of the five cases involving duplications of the rectum.Duplications of the alimentary tract are encountered only occasionally in adults; malignant change, although rare, should be recognised as a possible complic

AbstractOesophageal biopsies from endoscopically normal patients were incubated in the following for up to 30 min—Ham's F10 medium:isotonic saline:0.1 N HCl:20, 2 and 0.2 mM bile acids:trypsin: pepsin:lipase; autologous gastric and duodenal juices. The biopsies were then examined by electron microscopy. No morphological change was produced by Ham's F10 or saline. HCl caused little damage. Gastric juice produced widespread severe damage, as did pepsin. Duodenal juice and the enzymes tested caused lysis and internalisation of desmosomes and peripheral cytoplasmic vacuolation. Bile acids split desmosomes and induced microvesiculation of the cell membranes. Similar microvesiculation was also induced by duodenal juice. All media except hydrochloric acid eventually produced organelle damage and leaky and disrupted cells. The functional and superficial cells appeared to be able to withstand attack from these experimental media better than did prickle and basal cells. AbstractMice exposed to tobacco smoke (TS) for 3 days or 18 or 28 weeks, prior to SRBC inoculation, subsequently displayed less pronounced and/or “shorter‐lived” splenomegaly than age matched controls. In addition mice exposed to TS for three days or 18 weeks displayed a reduction in both the magnitude and duration of the primary immune response as evidenced by the pattern of expansion of splenic white pulp and “RNA‐rich” white pulp volumes.
