摘要:
This paper attempts to evaluate the performance of an official composite leading index (CLI) which is used for economic forecasting in Singapore. To examine whether the CU or its component leading indicators presage activity over the business cycle, we use bivariate time series techniques. Crossamlation functions are estimated to determine the strength of leadlag relationships between the leading indicators and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The predictive ability of the CLI is also assessed by its contribution towards time series model forewts of the economy.

摘要:
The economic ties between Taiwan and the mainland China had been restored since 1987. A comparison of Taiwan's investment toward the mainland and the ASEANs shows that the investment size is much smaller in the mainland in terms of money flow; nonetheless, much higher in terms of number of firms. Also, the effects of investment‐induced trade is much stronger in the mainland. Using the 1986 Input‐Output Tables and the data set of officially registered investment volume by industry, this paper simulates the possible linkage effects on output, employment and export shift for both si

摘要:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the industrial organizational features of the financial markets in Thailand which may play an important role in promoting the recent high economic growth. Specifically, we examine whether or not the market‐structure‐performance hypothesis is valid by estimating profit and cost functions. The main results are as follows:1) market concentration in Thailand is higher than in Japan;2) expense rate of Thai commercial banks is considerably higher than Japanese banks;3) economies of scale are not found;4) the more concentrated the market is, the larger are the profits and costs of the commercial ba

摘要:
The uneven distribution of resources, income and wealth in the world makes it desirable to devise a method for evaluating the relative levels of human development in different countries, but a satisfactory approach needs to go beyond calibration of output per head. This paper explores key issues concerning the measurement of human development and examines the UNDP's modified Human Development Index, assessing its potential usefulness and limitations in enabling comparisons across countries. The extent to which the approach can provide the basis for a profile of an individual country is also analysed, using Singapore as a case study.
