摘要:
Partial weight bearing is an integral part of the recovery process for a variety of clinical conditions. The authors studied 15 healthy young women (age 20–30) and 15 healthy older women (age > 65) in partial weight bearing after training with feedback. The results indicate that older patients (particularly those with sensory deficits) may require more training than young patients to leam partial weight bearing despite being able to perform it with feedback during the training period.

摘要:
Falls in older adults are common, and causes are multifaceted, requiring a multidimensional approach to intervention. Controlled studies looking at interventions to lower fall incidence are limited. This article reviews falls intervention research with an emphasis on the FICSIT trials. Issues unique to the nursing home population and challenges and limitations to falls intervention research are addressed. Practical clinical recommendations for falls reduction are provided.

摘要:
Strength loss has been identified as a common deficit among frail older persons and has been associated with poor physical performance and falls. Research findings convincingly show that strength loss is modifiable even in the oldest old. The effectiveness of strength training has primarily been defined in terms of strength outcomes. Less is known about the impact of strength training on physical performance or disability. Variability in the strength measures used, populations studied, and performance and disability measures used has made research findings difficult to compare. This article reviews the current evidence for and discusses issues regarding the relationships between strength training and performance and disability.

摘要:
The objective of this article was to review the recent literature (1990–1995) on drugs and falls in the older population. A computerized literature search identified 19 research articles. The quality of each study was critically evaluated, and a consistent risk relationship between the use of psychotropic drugs and falls was identified. Moreover, polypharmacy and certain cardiovascular agents may be associated with falls. Finally, it is controversial as to whether certain agents (eg, analgesics, hypoglycemics) are associated with falls. Future studies are necessary to better understand the relationship between drugs and falls in the older adult.

摘要:
The relationship between fear of falling, past and future falls, physical performance, disability, and psychosocial factors in older men with impaired mobility was examined. This study shows that fear of falling is not limited to those with a history of falls, but rather is a prevalent syndrome among older persons with impaired mobility. Fear of falling is associated with diminished physical performance, increased disability, and greater depression, but is not necessarily predictive of future falls.
