摘要:
This article is a general survey of the difficulties of and options for finding journal articles, with emphasis on geriatrics literature. Methods discussed include personal experience and personal databases, consulting with colleagues, citation studies, and the use of secondary sources (bibliographic databases). Some important databases for medical and geriatrics literature are described. These include Medline, Embase, Amed, CINAHL, Ageline, PsychInfo, and Science Citation Index. Considerations pertinent to using these tools include relevance, natural language as against controlled vocabularies, subject indexing, and access to databases. Geriatrics literature is extensive and dispersed, information needs must be precisely defined, and effective searching will probably require use of the indexing and retrieval system appropriate to the database.

摘要:
This article reports an investigation into the coverage of the journal literature of geriatrics by selected bibliographic databases, including Medline, Embase, PsychInfo, Amed, and Ageline. Searches were designed to indicate the total coverage of geriatrics literature by each system and the retrieval of references relevant to a specific topic (eg, stroke rehabilitation in the elderly). The results supported previous findings: geriatrics literature is extensive and diffused over many journals and databases; no database provides comprehensive coverage; and retrieval performance varies among databases. A careful consideration of the sources to be searched and search design is particularly important in geriatrics.

摘要:
The purpose of this article is to review the use of the Internet to find information on geriatric rehabilitation. Search tools and associated strategies are presented along with examples of information generated by various searches. Usenet newsgroups, e-mail discussion groups, translation software, and electronic magazines and journals are described to assist readers in their own Internet searches for clinically relevant information.

摘要:
A considerable discrepancy exists between the findings of research that are relevant to practice and findings that are actually applied. This article briefly discusses the issue of research usefulness and applicability. Literature addressing the research utilization behavior of clinicians is reviewed. Actions are described that can be taken to bring research to application.

摘要:
Clinical research in geriatric rehabilitation that seeks to improve health and quality of life of older adults is a priority for many private foundations and government agencies. Understanding the components of a competitive grant proposal, a strategy to identify the most appropriate source of funding, and knowledge of the grant review and resubmission process will assist clinicians interested in pursuing clinical research in preparing a successful grant application. This article also summarizes the research priorities of key federal agencies and private foundations that provide grant support for research and graduate education focused on geriatric rehabilitation.

摘要:
Research questions can take many forms. A practical framework for research questions is presented. Alternative designs are summarized in a way that should foster classification and interpretation of research designs. A set of four basic questions within which most research can be captured is presented. Designs that can be used to answer the questions are categorized.

摘要:
Dissemination of research is important for expanding the body of knowledge related to geriatric rehabilitation. Conference presentations and journal publications are traditional means of sharing research findings with other professionals. This article provides guidelines for clinicians who wish to prepare a research report for presentation at a conference or for publication in a journal.
