摘要:
There is little consensus in the literature regarding the best motor performance outcome measure or treatment intervention for a patient with stroke. There is agreement that data be collected and treatment outcomes evaluated. This review includes measures of motor function impairment and disability. An overview of interventions to improve motor function after stroke and relevant guidelines are discussed. It is clear that one measure or treatment is not adequate and that impairments, disability, handicap, and quality of life should be addressed. Stroke severity and degree of deficits will greatly impact the utility and efficacy of outcome measures and interventions.

摘要:
Swallowing problems (dysphagia) following stroke are common and occur more frequently in older people. This article first presents a brief overview of the incidence and prevalence of dysphagia poststroke, the presence of aspiration, its effect on morbidity, and the effects of aging on swallowing. Thereafter, a review of current trends in the evaluation of dysphagia is given, including bedside swallow assessments, videofluoroscopy, and pulse oximetry. A review of treatment strategies employed by speech and language therapists is given together with the evidence (or lack of it) for such strategies.

摘要:
Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common and disabling problem after stroke. Clinical practice guidelines have been developed outlining assessment parameters and identifying treatment options for incontinence in adults. Research on UI after stroke reveals the need for interventions to treat urge and stress incontinence as well as manage or prevent urinary retention and overflow incontinence. Strategies need to be tailored to individuals with varying levels of physical and cognitive ability. This article describes the nature of voiding problems after stroke, explores the impact on recovery and life after stroke, and outlines recommendations for evaluating and treating UI based on the continence literature.
