摘要:
AbstractSerial values of monthly rainfall over long periods at Kew and six other stations in the British Isles have been analysed. The means for each of the twelve months were formed and the sequences of wet and dry months (above and below average respectively) investigated. It was found that a close relationship existed betweenm, the number of successive like months, andF, the frequency with which such a series occurred; namely logF=Rm+S, whereRandSare constants for each station.In Section III, after statistical tests for the absence of correlation, a mathematical theory has been advanced on the basis that the sequences are purely accidental. The probability formulae obtained explained fully the empirical relationship, giving a satisfactory representation of the observational data.
