摘要:
The microscopic anatomy of the vegetative parts ofPetermannia cirrhosais described for the first time. This information lends support to the exclusion ofPetermanniafrom the Dioscorea‐ceae with which it has been tentatively associated, the vascular anatomy of the two being quite dissimilar. No satisfactory explanation of the peculiar leaf‐opposed position of the tendrils (inflorescence homologues) can be offered, except that it clearly cannot be accounted for by sympodial growth. Vascular tissues inPetermanniaare very unspeciali

摘要:
The present paper deals with the anatomical description of five taxa belonging to the genusFuirena. These can be divided into two groups: (i)F.wallichianaandF.umbellata;with short, cubical silica‐cells each containing one or two cone‐shaped silica‐bodies, and (ii)F.uncinata, F.ciliarisandF.pubescensvar.pergamentacea, with long silica‐cells each containing two to six silica‐bodieS. Further distinction at the specific level is possible on the basis of the presence or absence of wedge‐shaped silica deposits, the nature of the anticlinal walls, the outline of the inner stomatal pore and the size of the inter‐stomatal cellS. A characteristic type of stoma revealing an inner astroporous condition is also reported. A key based on the characters visible in the surface views of leaf

摘要:
The present work contains anatomical descriptions of seven taxa belonging toCyperussubgen.Kyllinga.There are 11 characters common to all the specieS. However, in the light of the observed interspecific differences, the species can be broadly segregated into two groups–those with symmetrical leaves (C.brevifolius, C.melanospermus, C.melanospermusssp.bifoliusandC.sesquiflorus) and those with asymmetrical leaves (C.kyllingia, C.metziiandC. Triceps). The species within each respective group can be distinguished further on the basis of the presence or absence of contents within the adaxial epidermal cells, the shape of the subsidiary cells and the median keel, the presence of a simple or multiple epidermis and solitary or pair of bundles in the midrib, the size of the costal and interstomatal cells and the transectional outline of the leaf. A key based on characters visible in transection of the leaf is presente

摘要:
Investigation of correlations between a number of two‐state attributes for a sample of grass genera revealed that a high proportion of the correlations were statistically significant. There were proportionately more correlations between attributes from the same organ than between attributes from different organS. Furthermore, attributes associated with the fruit and leaf were found to be more closely correlated with attributes other than those of the flower and spikelet, thereby indicating fruit and leaf attributes to be important in the classification of the grasseS. It is considered that the correlations have arisen in part as a result of the phylogenetic origins of the genera and in part as a response to natural selection determining distribution of genera adapted to present‐day habit

摘要:
The mature epidermis and development of stomata in some species of Gentianaceae, viz.Canscora deccusata, C.diffusa, Hoppea dichotoma, Enicostema littorale, Nymphoides cristatumandGentiana pedicellata, are described. The stomatal development is shown to be trilabrate mesogenous inCanscora deccusata, C.diffusa, Enicostema littoraleandHoppea dichotoma, mesoperigenous inGentianaand perigenous inNymphoides. It is suggested that adoption of an aquatic habit byNymphoidesmay have resulted in suppression of divisions in its perigenous stomata.

摘要:
At present it is known that some 13 genera of non‐leguminous Angiosperms include at least some species which bear root nodules with the property of nitrogen fixation.Alnusis the best known example. To assist in the assessment of the ecological importance of these plants, the author has surveyed the relevant literature to discover how many species in each of the genera have been recorded to bear noduleS. He also provides evidence of this feature in several species not hitherto reported. Of an estimated total complement of 342 species in the 13 genera, 118 species haye so far been recorded to bear nodules. The remaining species do not appear to have been examined for the presence of nodule

摘要:
The results of cytological investigations on 95 populations from 60 species of mosses are given. These results include studies of gametophyte mitoses from 26 of the species concerned. The technique for obtaining gametophyte mitotic preparations is described. Karyotype comparisons are made within the generaPolytrichumandDicranumand the value of such comparisons is stressed. Where possible gametophytic mitotic observations have been correlated with sporo‐phytic meioses from the same gathering
