摘要:
The Araceae is a large, mainly tropical family, many members of which contain bioactive substances which are often either toxic or irritating. Inflorescences frequently emit strong fragrances. The active compounds have not been adequately determined nor is the chemotaxonomy of the family very well known, except for one major study of flavonoids. Two groups of compounds of known bioactivity—alkylresorcinols and nitrogenous sugar analogues—have been sought in representative species from most of the genera in the family. Although percentage sampling was necessarily small, a few examples of species containing these substances were found and some taxonomic suggestions are made and compared with results in the literature. This survey is a basis for further work on the fam

摘要:
A cladistic analysis of subtribe, Pleurothallidinae (Orchidaceae) is based on 45 anatomical/ morphological characters. The ingroup members comprise 24 genera; the large genusPleurothallisconsists of two subgenera and ten species complexes. Three taxa representing subtribes Laeliinae and Arpophyllinae are designated as outgroup. Eight most parsimonious trees were discovered using computer assisted software (length = 230; CI = 0.27). The hypothesis that subtribe Pleurothallidinae has undergone a unilinear reduction in the number of pollinia is not supported by this study. Although the eight‐pollinia state as represented byOctomeriaapparently is plesiomorphic, the two‐pollinia and four‐pollinia states arose early in the phylogeny of the subtribe. Both two‐and four‐pollinia states subsequently reappeared as parallelisms. The six‐pollinia state exhibited inBrachionidiumis autapomorphic. This cladistic analysis suggests thatPleurothallisis not a natural genus and, perhaps may be divided into several disc

摘要:
A simple and efficient installation for drying plants that is both rapid and preserves colour, and which works on the principle of autonomous thermal convection, is presented. The described apparatus offers significant advantages including: uniform heat distribution and short drying times; a system for applying pressure to prevent shrinkage, which uses polyurethane foam sheets and elastic straps; a compact, space‐saving system suitable for field or laboratory applications; absorbent materials which can be re‐used immediately; ability to run off differing power supplies (110/220 V) and to use infra‐red lamps of varying specifications; low cost and ease o

摘要:
Two new species of the genusAnisopappusHook.&Arn. (Asteraceae) are describedA. athanasioidesPaiva&Ortiz, from Angola, andA. pseudopinnatifidusOrtiz&Paiva, from Namibia. The morphological variability of theA. chinensia‐A. africanuscomplex is studied and two new combinations are proposed:A. chinensissubsp.africanus(Hook. fil.) 摘要:
The leaf trichomes of the evergreen and semi‐deciduous species of the genusQuercusliving in the Iberian Peninsula were studied by means of SEM and LM. The SEM has been particularly useful because of the high quality of the illustrations and the possibility of recognizing the structures under I,M or the stereomicroscope afterwards. The studied species were:Quercus coccifera, Q ilex, Qrotundifolia, Q suber, Q canariensis, Q faginea, Q brateroiand Qlusitanica. All species show some exclusive particularities that permit their identification using these characters. The abaxial surface of the leaf always has more trichomes than the adaxial and hence provides more characters for identification.Quercus alpestrisBoiss. shows the same features in the leaf trichomes asQ fagineaLam. A key for identification using these characters is provide

摘要:
A population of pondweeds from the River Stour in Dorset intermediate in morphology betweenPotamogeton natansL. andP. nodosusPoir. is shown by means of isozyme evidence to be the hybridP. × schreberiG. Fisch. It is represented by a single multi‐enzyme phenotype which, together with its sterility, suggests it reproduces vegetatively and may well constitute a single clone. It is genetically distinct from the morphologically similar hybrid betweenP. lucensL. andP. natans (P. xfluitansRot
