AbstractInvestigations on water relations of spruce infested by Armillaria sp.Picea omorikaandPicea abiesintested byArmillariasp. showed increased osmotical potential and reduced water content in the needles compared with not infested controls. The transpiration flow rates decreased with increasing infestation. Inserting grafts from mother trees, damaged byArmillaria, in healthy stock led to normal development of the grafts without disease to the stock.

AbstractInteractions between the two most common decay fungi ofPopulus tremuloides, Peniophora polygoniaandPhellinus tremulaewere studied.Pe. polygoniainhibited the growth ofPh. tremulaewhen grown in paired culture. The presence of a culture ofPe. polygoniareduced the growth ofPh. tremulaein a volatile metabolite test. A culture filtrate ofPe. polygoniareduced the growth ofPh. tremulaein liquid culture. AbstractExtensive plantations of two Euramerican poplar clones, “I‐214” and “I‐45/51” were badly damaged by frost cracks in N. Greece in 1981 and 1985. A bacterial flora consisting of 7 strictly aerobic (Pseudomonadaceae) and 2 facultatively anaerobic strains (Enterobacteriaceae) was regularly isolated from stained heartwood and occasionally from normal sapwood of cracked trees. AbstractA new method has been developed for studying the history ofGremmeniella abietinainfection in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) stands. The branch analysis method is based mainly on the occurrence of necrotic cankers and scars caused byG. abietinain annual shoots of branches. AbstractScanning electron microscopy showed thatTrichoderma polysporum, T. harzianumandT. viridewere mycoparasites on the rhizomorphs ofArmillaria gallica. TheseTrichodermaspecies attacked and penetrated the melanized outer tissue of the rhizomorph and once inside they killed theArmillariahyphae by coiling and direct penetration. After one week the rhizomorphs infected with each of the three species ofTrichodermawere devoid of hyphae.

AbstractHeterobasidion annosumisolates were collected from spruce, pine and mixed stands growing on forest and former agricultural soils. Intersterility groups of the isolates were identified. Pine was attacked by the P group only and spruce mostly by the S group. Frequency of the P group on spruce was higher on old forest soils and in mixed spruce and pine stands. Based on its in vitro compatibility with the F group, the S population in Byelorussia and Lithuania is more closely related to the Finnish S population than to the Alpine S population ofH. annosum.

AbstractCryphonectria parasiticagrew on American and Chinese chestnut total aqueous and tannin extracts from winter and summer bark. Differences in the amount of conidial germination and growth on extracts of the two species were small.C. parasiticatannase (tannin acyl hydrolase) was found to be more abundant intracellularly, had a pH optimum of 5.5, and a temperature optimum for activity of 30°C.
