AbstractA review of the literature is presented and an infection experiment described. Dwarf plants ofPinus sylvestrisare seldom infected and destroyed by the snow mould fungusPhacidium infestans. The reasons are: The amount of infection material is usually small, the ecological conditions do not favour infection and subsequent development of the disease, the plants are small targets for spores and infective needles, the dwarf plants are fairly resistant.

AbstractClimatic data during the past six years associated with the outbreak ofScleroderriscanker in 1970 were analyzed. Exceptionally low air temperatures from late September to early October 1969, and a subsequent long period of deep snow were considered the main factors favouring the outbreak of the canker.

AbstractThe effect of vapours from asphaltic bitumen on plants. Asphaltic bitumen vapours escape from hot‐mix asphalt plants and are deposited on leaves and shoots. Experiments were initiated to show whether such droplets cause injuries to plants. Results show that only certain sensitive plants develop symptoms, and then only when more than 3 mg of condensate are deposited per 100 cm2of leaf surface. Injuries caused by bitumen vapours and those caused by coal‐tar vapours were closely related. They were both activated by UV‐light and the symptoms were similar though milder in the case of bitumen. AbstractThalli ofArmillaria melleagrew vigorously and produced abundant rhizomorph after 21 days of incubation on a glucose‐L‐asparagine medium supplemented with auxin, but grew poorly and failed to produce rhizomorphs on a non‐supplemented medium or on one supplemented with either gibberellic acid or kinetin. Replacement of glucose in auxin‐supplemented medium with arabinose, fructose, galactose, maltose, sucrose or starch resulted in poor thallus growth and a lack of rhizomorph development. The superiority of glucose as a carbon source for thallus growth appears to be related to its superiority as a substrate for metabolism byA.
