AbstractStudies have been carried out on the causes of wood deterioration in poplars following decline due to water stress in Italy. The incidence of 21 wood decay fungi, among whichTrametes trogiiBerk, is the most widely spread, is reported. Some suggestions for reducing the damage are offered.

AbstractThe frequency and degree of aspen stump colonization by undeterminedArmillariasp. was quantified by examination of 185 bulldozed stumps in two Wisconsin aspen stands, 2or5 years after cutting. Rhizomorphs were associated with all stumps examined. AbstractBlack stain root disease, caused by the fungusLeptographium wageneri, is a native disease of western North America. It primarily attacks severalPinusspecies andPseudotsuga menziesii.Currently absent from Europe, any accidental introduction or the pathogen could pose a threat to the commercially grown conifers in Europe. To assess the extent of this threat, the susceptibility of nine European and North American conifer species to this disease was examined.

AbstractDistribution ofXanthomonas populisubs,populiwas studied 21 days postinoculation in highly susceptible, susceptible and tolerant poplar clones (Populus trichocarpa): Heimburger, Muhle‐Larsen and Columbia River. Bacteria were observed in the intercellular spaces of leaf trace of both clones Heimburger and Muhle‐Larsen. No bacteria were detected 21 days after inoculation (dpi) in ultrathin sections of the clone Columbia River. AbstractIn the present paper, we address the question whether the injuries of acute toxic concentrations of exhaust emissions are due to systemic effects or are rather the result of localized and direct effects upon the needles. Twigs from exposed spruce trees, which had been prevented from contact with the exhaust emissions, did not show any decrease of photosynthetic or transpiration rates within four weeks. Chlorophyll fluorescence was also not affected in these parts, while it was severely impaired in the exposed twigs.
