摘要:
AbstractDry zones in conifer wood, characterised by gas filled tracheids, were induced by the injection of dilute solutions of various toxic chemicals followed by incubation at 10 or 20°C. The development of dry zones did not occur at lower temperatures nor with concentrated solutions and was prevented or retarded in an atmosphere of nitrogen. These results are discussed in relation to the development of dry zones in infections byFomes annosusand other fungi and in the formation of heartwood. It is postulated that the gradual death of ray cells alters their metabolism in such a way that gas emboli are evolved in adjacent tracheids; this can occur at sites of infection or at a distance under the influence of transportable or diffusible toxins

摘要:
AbstractThe distribution, properties and origin of wetwood were investigated. Healthy dominant trees contained a central region of dead, water‐soaked wood (wetwood) at the butt, which extended into the main roots and sometimes into the upper stem, comprising part of the normal heart‐wood. Wetwood was also formed in the sapwood in response to infection byFomes annosusor injection of mercuric chloride. The water in wetwood had an internal origin and its accumulation depended on the physiological condition of the tree. Wetwood formation could be pre‐vented by a phloem block and was preceded by withdrawal of water from localised regions in the sapwood: water later accumulated within these dried regions, although a peripheral zone of greatly reduced moisture content remained. Mechanisms by which water might move across this dry zone are disc

摘要:
AbstractCauses and criteria of resistance to air pollution in Norway spruce. 1. Morphological and anatomical resistance. Pollution resistance of selected visibly resistant clones is not due to environmental causes or to length of the growing season. Between the resistant and other clones there are significant differences in morphology and anatomy of the needles. The average length, width and weight of the needles of resistant spruce grafts arc greater than those of none resistant. The resistant grafts have more stomata and, at least in winter, lower permeability of needle tissue to gases.

摘要:
AbstractCeratocystis fimbriata, the cause of “target canker” in aspen,Populus trenuloidesMichx. In North America, is reported associated with similar cankers on some poplar hybrids (Papulus maximowiczii × P. x. berolinensis) of the so‐called “black balsam” group (Aigeiros × Tacamaliaca) in Poland.A short description of disease symptoms and the peritheeial and conidial stages of the fungus is given. The presence of bacterial canker caused byAplanobacter populiRidé has not been demonstrated in Poland by isolation from nat

摘要:
AbstractLaboratory experiments were conducted to test the effect of various concentrations of Trifluralin on certain fungi. The ectotrophic mycorrhizal fungi tested were:Amanita citrinaSchaefer,Tricholoma pessundatum(Fr.) Quel., andTricholoma saponaceum(Fr.) Qtiel. All exhibited sensitivity to Trifluralin concentrations. The consequence of such fungitoxicity was discussed.

摘要:
AbstractTrace metals associated with the surfaces of urban tree leaves were testedin vitrowithGnomonia platani. Certain cations, at concentrations approximating the higher levels found in nature, were capable of restricting vegetative growth, suppressing conidial production or reducing spore germination.
