AbstractGremmeniella abietinainfects shoots of red and Scots pines through stomata on bracts that subtend short shoots. The germ tube penetrates between guard cells and sparsely colonizes bract tissue by late summer or fall. Only after about late January or early February of the following year does the fungus extend from the bract and begin colonization of the short shoot and surrounding cortical tissue.

AbstractInoculation of a range of poplar species and clones with conidia ofMarssoninaspecies in the laboratory resulted in the identification oftwo formae specialesofM. brunnea, and established thatM. castagneiwas not specifically pathogenic toP. alba. Poplars infected withM. brunnea, M. castagneiandM. populiexhibited an overlapping range of symptoms, varying from discrete spots to blotches. The dendritic lesion symptom was peculiar toM. populiand was host specific.

AbstractPectinasc activities of Nectria ditissima Tul. cause of the Beech canker.In vitro, Nectria ditissimais capable of secreting pectinases necessary for degradation of pectic material of the cell wall. Some pectinascs, ENDOPG, EXOPG and EXOPMG, play a prominent part in degradation of the barkin vivo, their primary participation being affected by the conditions of the bark environment, especially pH. The virulence of four pathogenically different strains ofN. ditissimais partly correlated with their ability to produce the pectinace essential for alteration of the barkin vitro.

AbstractButt rot of Picea abies in pure and in mixed stands. On comparable soils, stands withPicea abiesandP, abiesmixed with other tree species were analysed for butt rot. In mixed stands the percentage of butt rot inP. abieswas about the same as in pure stands.

AbstractA fully automated piece of equipment for digital time‐lapse cinematography of a series of objects (DTLCSO) was used to record the course of defense reactions of callus cultures derived from the developed root, hypocotyl, cotyledons and young epicotyl needles ofPicea abiesseedlings against a wooddestroying fungusPhaeolus schweinitzii. AbstractComparative studies were made on the effect of bacteria and actinomycetes on germination of conidia ofCylindrocarpon destructans. It was found that bacteria, especially strains isolated from the mycorrhizosphere affected germination of conidia stronger than the actinomycetes, although the response of different isolates of the fungus to the action of the strains used was different.
