Intragastric instilation of 300 mg histamine bichlorhydrate produces an evident increase of acid gastric secretion in patients with acute hepatitis. This anomaly was not observed during recovery or remission of the illness, nor did it occur in patients without hepatic disease or portal systemic shunts. This confirms the importance of the human liver in the inactivation of histamine.

A study on salivary secretion in human volunteers reveals a significant increase following topical application of sodium glutamate to the dorsum of the tongue. Basal and stimulated salivary secretion is modified by pretreatment with Diazepam which decreases the flow rate for at least 3 hours.

Thirty-seven scans were made in 27 cases of chronic schistosomiasis japonica in our series of over 800 liver scans. The spleen was visualized in the majority of the patients. In 7 (26%), the liver configuration looked like an ‘inverted triangle’ with the vertex downward, and it was round in 2 (7%). In 13 (48%), the inferolateral portion of the right lobe was thinned or almost disappearing on the scan, without discernible transition from the right to the left lobe. These characteristics of the liver shape are distinct from those in Laennec type cirrhosis. None of the non-schistosomal liver patients in our series showed the inverted triangle configuration. In 5 patients with duodenal ulcer the secretion of pepsin following a continuous intravenous infusion of pentagastrin in a dose of 0.005, 0.01, 0.1 and 0.2 μg/kg/min has been investigated. In every exanimation the stimulation was continued for 2½ h, and the examinations were carried out on different days. Enteric-coated trypsin and chymotrypsin were given orally to 12 fasted human subjects in a dose of 200 mg and 100 mg respectively. Estimation of trypsin and chymotrypsin in blood and serum revealed no consistent change in activity over the succeeding 9 h with respect to the zero-time test value, or to the values for the corresponding time intervals on a separate occasion omitting oral enzymes. The trypsin-inhibitor activity of serum was likewise unaltered in 4 subjects in whom this determination was made. Trypsin and chymotrypsin, administered in a dose of 200 mg of each to four subjects by duodenal intubation also failed to alter the blood and serum levels of these enzymes. In addition to these results, further reasons are given for regarding intestinal absorption of pancreatic enzymes as currently unproven.

The present report describes the clinical, radiological and immunocytochemical studies performed in a patient with IgAL-myelomatosis. This case was unusual in that the clinical picture was dominated by a malabsorption syndrome with protein losing enteropathy, apparently in the absence of amyloidosis. The literature dealing with similar cases is briefly reviewed. Moreover, although the coexistence of malabsorption and myelomatosis could not be ex- eluded, the possibility is discussed that the sprue-like intestinal disorders may have triggered the onsetof the myelomatous disease.

By presenting 3 illustrative cases, it is concluded that pain controlling medicines and cortisone may cause the development of a large benign ulcer on the greater curvature, at the site, which was earlier considered rare. This is explained by the fact that in erect position in hypotonic stomach the tablets get into contact with the mucosa at the site of greater curvature.
