A case of acquired double pyloric channel in a 62-year-old man is reported, with a review of the available literature on the topic. Double pylorus or gastroduodenal fistula is a rare condition, nearly always following a penetrating and fistulous ulcer; there is no particular or autonomous clinical picture, and the diagnosis is usually made by means of radiology and endoscopy.

Fucoidan was extracted from the seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum with boiling water and purified by repeated precipitation steps. Increasing doses of fucoidan (1.2–200 mg) were injected together with 360 nmol 59Fe-(FeCl3) or 60Co-(CoCl2) into tied-off jejunal segments of two groups of rats fed either a normal (160mg Fe/kg) or a low iron diet (5 mg/kg). Fucoidan together with 360 nmol 54Mn-(MnCl2) or 65Zn-(ZnCl2) was administered in the same manner in rats fed a normal diet only. Fucoidan administered in doses above 30 mg decreased the absorption of iron, cobalt, manganese and zinc in normal rats, and the absorption of iron and cobalt in iron-deficient rats. This inhibitory effect of fucoidan on the absorption of heavy metals is apparently the consequence of the formation of metal complexes which are poorly absorbed from the intestinal lume

Acute pancreatitis is an unusual feature of non-pancreatic neoplasia. The presentation and clinical course of 7 patients with carcinoma metastatic to the pancreas is reported. In 5 the initial presentation was acute pancreatitis, and in the remaining 2 the diagnosis was made at autopsy. The primary sites of cancer were in the stomach (5 patients), bronchus (1 patient) and tonsil (1 patient).

In a prospective study, a comparison between immediate and next-day endoscopy has been made in 100 patients with acute upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage. Neither regime was statistically superior to the other. It is concluded that in the majority of patients immediate emergency endoscopy is unnecessary.

Six closely related analogues of somatostatin were tested for their ability to inhibit electrically induced contractions of the mouse vas deferens. Their inhibiting activities tended to parallel their reported effects on gastric acid secretion in vivo, while no correlation to their in vitro growth hormone release-inhibiting activities was observed. It is suggested that information derived from the vas deferens assay may provide a relatively rapid and inexpensive assessment of the effects of somatostatin analogues on gastric acid secretion. The vas deferens assay was also used to test several somatostatin analogues for antagonistic activity, which was not found.

Mechanical, enzymatic and chelating methods for isolating rat intestinal epithelial cells were compared to determine the best technique for obtaining high yields of viable cells. The mechanical techniques resulted in consistently poor viability compared with the other methods. There was excellent agreement between viability determinations made by trypan blue exclusion and by cytofluorochromasia. Incubation with EDTA, citrate and dithiothreitol, combined with mechanical extrusion of dissociated cells provided the highest yields of viable cells in these studies.

The effect on the intestinal mucosa of continuously infusing single amino acids, glycine, valine and histidine into the stomach and ileum was compared with saline and an amino acid mixture (AA) in rats fed by parenteral nutrition. After gastric infusion, glycine did not differ from saline, valine increased mucosa in the proximal segments and histidine alone increased mucosa in the proximal bowel equal to AA. After ileal infusion, all amino acids increased mucosa in the ileum. Valine and histidine, but not glycine, increased mucosa in the remote proximal small bowel. Therefore, regional differences occur in mucosal growth response to single amino acids.
