This, the fourth edition of the standard and, indeed, so far as the reviewer’s knowledge goes, the only text-book on the subject in the language, bridges L gap of 13 years. The author, pre-eminent in his particular sphere, needs little more introduction to the world of technical industry than he does in his official capicity to readers of THE ANALYST, while his reputation in forensic science in all that appertains to handwriting is international. EL SHAMY I5 a previous investigation two of us1 obtained values for the redox potentials of the system MoVI/MoV in 6 N to 8 N and 2 N to 4 N hydrochloric acid which suggested that quinque-valent molybdenum might possess considerable stability in air and might serve as a reducing agent in a variety of titrations. This and the following papers record the results of experiments made to test the stability and applicability of that reagent. It has been found that although quinquevalent molybdenum possesses limited applicability as a reducing agent it has the advantage over the more powerful ones in being more stable and in that it can be kept and used for reasonable periods of time without special precautions to exclnde air.(i) PREPARATION OF QUINQUEVALENT MOLYBDENUM SOLUTIONS-Determination of the molecular formulae of the cationic forms of sexa- and quinque-valent molybdenum ions in 6 N to 8 N and 2 N to 4 N hydrochloric acid indicated that they can be represented by MOO," and MOO"' within the former range and by (Moo,"), and (MOO"') within the latter and that the colour of the solutions is pure emerald green or brown-red respectively. Between the two ranges quinquevalent molybdenum solutions possess mixed colorations and below 2 N acid it tends to combine with any sexavalent molybdenum present to form molybdenum blue.Detailed study of the stability of these solutions showed that solutions in 8 N hydrochloric acid possessed the highest stability. In preparing the reagent by electrolytic reduction of solutions of pure molybdic acid in hydrochloric acid the acid concentration was therefore fixed at 8 N so as to obtain the green form from which the brown form could be prepared by appropriate dilution. The process of reduction was essentially the same as that recommended by Foerster.2 A cell having a capacity of 150 ml. was used with a blank platinum spiral anode and a platinised wire-gauze cathode separated from each other by a cylindrical alundum diaphragm. This was made by fixing together by means of paraffin wax two elongated crucibles from one of which the bottom had been removed.The current density amounted usually to 0.008 amp. per sq. cm. In order to avoid reduction beyond the quinquevalent state care was taken to adjust the current accurately and to stop the reduction as soon as all molybdenum was transformed into the quinquevalent state. The total molybdenum was determined by precipitation as sulphide and weighing as oxide. Quinquevalent molybdenum was determined as described by Stehlik,3 by volumetric and potentiometric titration of the hot solution with ceric sulphate solution in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide using ortho-phenanthroline ferrous complex indicator or the ceric sulphate as self-indicator. In all cases the end-points were found to agree with each other fairly accurately. The chloride content of the solutions was determined gravimetrically as silver chloride in the distillates obtained by boiling measured volumes of the solutions with pure concentrated sulphuric acid till white fumes of sulphur trioxide began to be evolved.Solutions of quinquevalent molybdenum in sulphuric or perchloric acid were obtained by boiling the quinquevalent molybdenum solution in hydrochloric acid with the appropriate amounts of concentrated sulphuric or perchloric acid until all hydrochloric acid was removed. (ii) STABILITY OF THE SOLUTIONS-Furman and Murray4 recorded some observations on the stability of quinquevalent molybdenum solutions in 2 N and 4 N hydrochloric acid. By titrating approximately 0.1 N solutions against standard ceric salts after different periods of time they concluded that it was possible to work with quinquevalent molybdenum without precautions to exclude air if the solutions were used within a short time.We extended these studies to other acidities taking into consideration the effect of other interfering factors. Samples of quinquevalent molybdenum solutions in 8 N 6 N 4 N and 2 N hydrochloric acid were kept in loosely stoppered colourless brown or waxed bottles, in or out of contact with platinised platinum and a t different temperatures. At 24-hour intervals over the course of at least a week samples were withdrawn by means of a pipett May 19481 DETERMINATION O F FERRIC IRON 259 and titrated against standard ceric sulphate solution. From the results obtained it was found that 1-(a) Light has no great effect in favouring oxidation.(b) The stability of the solutions increases with the acidity. A solution in 8 N hydro-chloric acid for example was found to suffer oxidation in one week to the extent of only 0.9 per cent. compared with 6.3 and 14.7 per cent. for solutions in 4 N and 2 N acid respectively. Platinised platinum catalyses oxidation more manifestly at lower than at higher acidities. Thus after one week solutions in 8 N acid were oxidised only to the extent of about 1.4 per cent. compared with 16.9 and 50.9 per cent. for solutions in 4 N or 2 N acid respectively. (d) Heating under reflux for about 4 hours at temperatures as high as 80" C. did not noticeably affect the stability of the solutions irrespective of their acidities. (iii) THE SPEED OF OXIDATION OF QUINQUEVALENT MOLYBDENUM-In connection with the above studies it seemed desirable to study the speed of oxidation by air a t different acidities and to determine where possible the order of the reaction.Attempts to measure volumetrically in a closed apparatus the amount of oxygen absorbed failed to lead to reliable results owing to the very slight oxygen absorption. Recourse was had to a process in which pure air saturated with water vapour was passed at the rate of either 2 or 4 bubbles per second at room temperature into 2 N 4 N 6 N and 8 N hydrochloric acid solutions containing MoV at normalities ranging from 0.2 to 0.01. Portions of the solutions were pipetted out every 24 hours over a period of about one week and titrated against standard ceric sulphate. By plotting the logarithms of concentrations against time in each series, straight lines were obtained indicating that the reaction was unimolecular and of the first order throughout the whole acid range.Calculations of the velocity constants K of the different solutions showed that they were inversely proportional to the concentrations of quinquevalent molybdenum in the solutions of fixed acidity and to the various acidities at fixed quinquevalent molybdenum content. From the results obtained it follows that the stability of the quinquevalent molybdenum solutions increases proportionately with acid concentration. Solutions of maximum acidity cannot be used for titration purposes however on account of their high redox potentials. They are suitable as stock solutions but should be diluted so as to become 2 N with respect to the acid.(iv) POTEKTIOMETRIC DETERMIXATIOS OF FERRIC IRON-Carter and Clews? gave values for the standard redox potentials of the ferrous - ferric system in hydrochloric acid solutions of different normalities from which the following values could be obtained by interpolation at the respective acidities. (c) 8 N 4 N 2 N N 0.1 N HC1 0.790 0.875 0.922 0.948 0.988 volt at 25" C. Glover6 gave for the ferrous - ferric system in 0.1 N and 1.0 N sulphuric acid at 20" C. the standard potential values of 0.9548 and 0.9558 volt respectively from which the potentials at higher acidities deviated but slightly. From chemical evidence involving the titration of ferrou? perchlorate with ceric perchlorate Smith and Getz' deduced for the standard potential of the ferrous - ferric system in perchloric acid values which varied between 0.58 and 0.75 volt for the acid range 8 N to N perchloric acid.From the above formal potentials and those of the Mow/Mov system at corresponding acid concentrations one can calculate the equilibrium constant K of the reaction at 25" C. and hence the degree of completion using the following relations: In the above equations n and n2 represent the respective valency changes for both pairs Efi and Efi the formal potentials of the first and the second system respectively and u the degree of completion i.e. that fraction of oxidant or reductant that fails to react at the equivalence point 260 TOURKY FARAH AND EL SHAMY QUINQUEVALENT MOLYBDENUM [vol. 73 From the theoretical predictions which were essentially confirmed by experiment as may be seen from the following it is found that in hydrochloric acid solutions the titration of ferric iron by means of quinquevalent molybdenum can be effected quantitatively only at acid concentrations below 2 N whereas in the presence of sulphuric acid the titration can be performed irrespective of the acid concentration.Predictions of results in perchloric acid solutions could not be made owing to the lack of the necessary data. EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS AND RESTJLTS-The preparation and standardisation of quinquevalent molybdenum solutions were carried out as previously described. The femc salt solutions were prepared by dissolving the pure products in the respective acids. The iron content of such solutions was determined gravimetrically as ferric oxide.For the titrations an open calibrated 10-ml. burette was used that could be read to 0.02 of a millilitre. Care was taken to deliver equal volumes in equal periods of time. The titration vessel consisted of a well-steamed Pyrex glass beaker with a rubber stopper that had been previously boiled in dilute hydrochloric acid. The stopper had holes for the burette the stirrer the electrode and the salt-bridge and for the entrance and exit of pure carbon dioxide gas which was applied as an additional precaution to prevent the atmospheric oxidation of the reduced iron. The titration vessel was kept on an electrically heated plate of adjustable temperature. The indicator electrode found to be the most suitable consisted of a platinum rod 10 cm.long and 2.5 mm. in diameter, which at the end of a titration became immersed to about half its length in the solution. When not in use it was kept in 20 per cent. hydrochloric acid and before each titration rinsed with distilled water and ignited. The electrometric measurements were performed in the usual manner using a saturated calomel half-cell with saturated potassium chloride solution as the intermediate liquid. With 0.1 N hydrochloric acid the end of the titration was characterised by the appearance of a pale blue coloration (molybdenum blue) which became more intense on progressive addition of quinquevalent molybdenum. This affords a means of performing the titration visually. It is however necessary to accustom the eye to this colour change by performing parallel electrometric titrations. The presence of other metals such as aluminium nickel cobalt, copper and zinc in quantities not very much exceeding that of iron so as not to affect pro-foundly the ionic strengths of the solutions caused but slight deviations from the calculated values.In sulphuric acid media where the redox potentials do not vary appreciably with acidity quantitative reduction was found possible throughout excepting in 8 N sulphuric acid. In perchloric acid the results were analogous to those obtained in the presence of hydrochloric acid. In predicting the reducibility of iodate, bromate and chlorate by quinquevalent molybdenum use was therefore made of the E, values calculated from thermal or entropy data; these amount to 1.085 1.44 and 1.45 volt respective1y.l From the calculated degrees of completion a which are shown in Table I, it is found that the three oxidants can quantitatively oxidise quinquevalent molybdenum.Owing to their instability in acid media they should be used as the titrating solutions. KC10,in 4 N HCl . . 127 8.92 5.50 - 38‘34 From the foregoing results it can be seen that iodate solutions oxidise quinquevalent molybdenum quantitatively at all hydrochloric acid concentrations and at room temperature.The most favourable conditions are where the solutions are 4 N with respect to the acid, since at this concentration the equilibria are quickly attained and the titration curves have steep inflections. Figs. 1 and 2 show representative titration curves of quinquevalent molybdenum with potassium iodate and bromate respectively the acidity of the medium being 4 N with respect to hydrochloric acid. The broken curves represent the theoretical graphs for these titrations. The results obtained by the usual volumetric methods were found to coincide closely with those obtained potentiometrically. Addition of about 1 ml. of concentrated sulphuric acid per 100 ml.of the titration solution enhanced the liberation of iodine. Analogous results in respect of the effect of acidity the attainment of equilibria and the accuracy of both potentiometric and volumetric procedures were also obtained with bromate solutions. The accuracy attained by these methods equalling that attained with ceric sulphate solutions, permits the use of iodate and bromate as additional standardising solutions for quinquevalent molybdenum May 19481 BROMATE DICHROMATE AND VANADATE 263 Attempts to use chlorate as oxidant for quinquevalent molybdenum in hydrochloric acid solutions failed to give quantitative results under various conditions although the titration curves usually had steep inflections. Fig. 1 Fig. 2 (ii) THE TITRATION WITH PERMANGANATE ASD IODIKE-Attempts to carry out the titration with permanganate in hydrochloric acid solutions gave no reliable results owing also to the liberation of chlorine. Nor could the titration be performed with iodine solutions; these reacted very slowly in the cold more quickly in the heat but with loss of iodine by volatilisation. Somewhat better results were obtained by adding sodium bicarbonate to the quinquevalent molybdenum solution until a brick-red precipitate formed and then titrating with iodine solutions (Fig. 3) or by adding a known 044l Iodine soiution.ml Fig. 3 0.500 I 2 4 6 8 10 12 I4 Quinquevalent molybdenum solution rnl. Fig. 4 excess of iodine to the alkaline quinquevalent molybdenum solution and titrating back the excess of iodine with arsenite solution. The titration curve of a solution 0.0756 N in respect of Mo" with a 0.1157 N iodine solution as represented in Fig. 3 is characterised by a steep inflection amounting to about 70 millivolts per 0.1 ml. The equilibria took about 10 minutes to be established when the reaction was conducted at room temperature. The equivalence point deviated however by several per cent. from the calculated value 264 (iii) THE TITRATION OF DICHROMATE-From chemical as well as thermodynamic considerations Neuss and Rieman2 gave 1.36 volt as the standard potential value of the Crvl/Crm system.Smith and R i ~ h t e r ~ from potentiometric titrations of a series of phenanthroline ferrous complexes with ceric and dichromate ions in hydrochloric and sulphuric acid solutions of various concentrations, obtained for the former acid the following formal values. Heating to about 80" C. and addition of some chromic chloride solution causes the equilibria to be attained somewhat more quickly but leads to considerable deviations a t acidities higher than 2 N .The titration can however be safely conducted hot at 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. A May 19481 BROMATE DICHROMATE AND VANADATE 265 with iron (see p. 260) the end of the titration is characterised by the appearance of a pale blue coloration due to the formation of molybdenum blue. It is thus possible as with iron reduction to perform the titration visually after some electrometric trials. Very accurate results were obtained when the dichromate was used as the titrating solution. In these circumstances the equilibria were attained within a few seconds after each addition irrespective of the hydrochloric acid concentration in the medium. The accuracy of the titration affords an additional method for standardising quinquevalent molybdenum in presence of hydrochloric acid up to a concentration of 4 N .Figs. 4 and 5 show typical curves for titrations conducted at about 80°C. Fig. 4 for potassium dichromate in decinormal hydrochloric acid titrated with quinquevalent moly-bdenum and Fig. 5 for quinquevalent molybdenum with potassium dichromate as titrating solution in normal hydrochloric acid. (iv) THE TITRATIOS OF VANADATE-Considerable work has been done with the object of determining the E values of the 1'0,' /VO" system. Partington4 assigns the value 0.9996 which compares satisfactorily with the value 0.9992 obtained by Carpenter.5 These values are sufficiently far removed from the redox potential of the system MoV1/MoV to make the process quantitative.Vanadate solutions were prepared by heating appropriate weights of pure vanadic acid or vanadate in sufficient sulphuric acid until dissolved and then leaving to cool and diluting to the required volume. The vanadium concentration was determined by a procedure involving reduction by ferrous ammonium sulphate oxidation of the excess of ferrous ion by persulphate and oxidation of the reduced vanadyl by permanganate. Several parallel experiments yielded concordant results. The reduction of vanadate solutions by quinque-valent molybdenum was found to be quantitative as predicted by theory. The maximum increase in E.M.F. per 0.1 ml. amounted approximately to 100 millivolts (Fig. 6) and the equilibria were attained within a few seconds.(v) ATTEMPTS TO REDUCE MERCURIC SALT SOLUTIONS-For the mercurous/mercuric system in perchloric acid of molarities ranging from 0.02 to 1.0 Popoffs reported values between 0.9038 and 0,9072 volt from which it appears that quantitative reduction through quinquevalent molybdenum could be achieved provided that the reduction proceeded only to the mercurous state. Bearing in mind that the potentials of both systems might differ considerably in alkaline medium some trials were made to reduce mercuric chloride perchlorate and Nessler's solutions in 10 20 and 30 per cent. sodium hydroxide solution by quinquevalent molybdenum but without success. The Determination of Ceric Ferric Dichromate and Vanadate Solutions in Mixtures of Two and Three Together BY A. R. TOURKY M. Y. FARAH AND H. K. EL SHAMY As was shown in Parts I and I1 of this series solutions containing ceric ferric dichromate or vanadate ions could be titrated accurately by means of quinquevalent molybdenum.It seemed desirable to find out whether two or three of these compounds admixed could be determined consecutively with the same reagent. It was recognised that this would only be possible where there was a sufficiently wide difference between the redox potentials of the separate systems present together. Fortunately it is found that oxidants that are liable to be met with accompanying each other such as ceric and ferric or dichromate and ferric, fulfil these requirements in contradistinction from ceric and dichromate which possess close redox potential values. The first maximum inflection is about 400 millivolts per 0.1 ml. and corresponds to the end of ceric reduction the error amounting only to -0.11 per cent. The second inflection is about 50 millivolts per 0.1 ml. and coincides exactly with the calculated end-point.The titration can be conducted at room temperature and the equilibria are quickly attained if the solution contains hydrochloric acid at about 0.5 N . The titration should be conducted in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide to prevent re-oxidation of ferrous iron. (ii) THE TITRATION OF DICHROMATE AND FERRIC SOLUTIONS IN PRESENCE OF EACH OTHER-Fig. 2 shows a representative titration curve of a mixture containing 0.1100 N potassium dichromate and 0.1 128 N ferric iron titrated with 0.0470 N quinquevalent molybdenum, the titration medium containing hydrochloric acid at 0-1 N . The first maximum inflection, amounting to 27 millivolts per 0.1 ml. coincides exactly with the end of dichromate reduction. The second drop which amounts only to 19 millivolts per 0.1 ml.of reagent deviates however by 0.1 per cent. from the calculated value. The above titration can be performed accurately with deviations not exceeding 0.1 per cent. for iron provided that the hydrochloric acid concentration is maintained below 1 N and that it is conducted in the cold in a carbon dioxide atmosphere. At higher acidities and more particularly in hot solutions slight deviations from the calculated values are observed probably owing to interaction between the dichromate and hydrochloric acid. (iii) THE TITRATION OF CERIC AND VANADATE SOLUTIONS IN PRESENCE OF EACH OTHER-Fjg. 3 represents the titration curve of a solution mixture 0-1160 N in respect of ceric and 0.1390 N in respect of vanadate in approximately normal sulphuric acid titrated with 0.1070 N quinquevalent molybdenum solution.Two maximum inflections amountin May 19481 FERRIC DICHROMATE AND VANADATE SOLUTIONS 267 respectively to 26 and 212 millivolts per 0.1 ml. are recorded after the addition of 10.85 and 23.85ml. of quinquevalent molybdenum. As the calculated volumes are 10.84 and 23.84ml. respectively there is but a slight deviation amounting to about $0.09 per cent. at the first end-point whereas the second one coincides exactly with that required by calculation. (iV) THE TITRATION OF VANADATE AND FERRIC SOLUTIONS IN PRESENCE OF EACH OTHER-Attempts to reduce' vanadium in presence of iron failed to lead to accurate results, owing to the comparative proximity of the redox potentials of both systems. The titrations were performed with 0.0795 N quinquevalent molybdenum solution. Vanadate and ferric solutions were 0.1579 N and 0.1431 N respectively the acidity of the medium being 0.1 N with respect of hydrochloric acid. In this titration iron can therefore be determined accurately the end-point coinciding with that calculated. The titration of vanadium in the solution mixture on the other hand, showed deviations amounting to about 2 per cent. (v) THE TITRATION OF CERIC AND DICHROMATE SOLUTIONS IN PRESENCE OF EACH OTHER-Fig. 5 represents the titration curve of a solution having 0.1156 N ceric content and 0.1OOO N dichromate content titrated with 0.1283 N quinquevalent molybdenum solution, the titration medium being approximately 0.5 N in respect of hydrochloric acid.The only steep inflection amounting to 412 millivolts per 0.1 ml. reagent corresponds to a tota 268 RICKSON A SEMI-MICRO COMBUSTION METHOD 'FOR THE [Vol. 73 experimental end-point a t 16-70 ml. of quinquevalent molybdenum solution which agrees closely with the required value for the titration of both solutions (9.01 + 7.70 = 16.71 ml. of reagent). The absence of any apparent inflection at the end of the ceric reduction as shown by the curve is to be expected owing to the redox potentials of both systems being very close to each other (1.45 volts for the ceric/cerous and 1.3 f 0.1 volt for the dichromate/ chromic systems respectively). Although cerium in this mixture can not be accurately determined in this way yet if it is determined by another method it is possible by this titration to determine accurately the dichromate present.(vi) THE TITRATION OF MIXTURES COXTAINING CERIC VANADATE AND FERRIC SOLUTIOSS-Attempts to reduce ceric vanadate and ferric solutions in presence of each other failed to lead to accurate results. Curves a b and c in Fig. 6 represent the separate titrations of these solutions. Curve d (Fig. 6A) represents the titration of such mixture. The titrations were carried out with 0.1070 N quinquevalent molyb-denum solution. The ceric vanadate and ferric 04iO solutions were 0.1336 0.2086 and 0.1431 N < e 0700 medium was decinormal throughout. The maxi-mum inflections for the separate solutions amounted to 554 millivolts per 0.1 ml. of reagent for the ceric titration (curve a) 170 millivolts for the vanadate (curve b) and 27 millivolts for the ferric titration (curve c) compared with 80 22 and 4 millivolts per 0.1 ml. of reagent for the solution mixture, the percentage error in every case amounting to 2.1 per cent. for ceric 6.2 per cent. for vanadate and 3.7 per cent. for ferric ions. Better results could not be obtained by varying the condition of the titration with quinquevalent molybdenum as reducing agent. This, the fourth edition of the standard and, indeed, so far as the reviewer’s knowledge goes, the only text-book on the subject in the language, bridges L gap of 13 years. The author, pre-eminent in his particular sphere, needs little more introduction to the world of technical industry than he does in his official capicity to readers of THE ANALYST, while his reputation in forensic science in all that appertains to handwriting is international.The chemistry of ink, difficult as it is and at times not a little obscure, hcl- riot developed markedly in the interval since 1924; but what progress has been made is covered by Dr. Mitchell in this edition in a very thorough manner. He has found it necessary to enlarge his work to the extent of some 20 per cent. and, in addition, to rewrite a large portion. The arrangement of the book follows the lines of previous editions. After a comprehensive historical introduction, the work is divided into three sections dealing with writing inks, printing inks, and inks for miscellaneous purposes, respectively.Under Section 1 are considered the chemical nature and treatment of the various raw materials used for writing inks from lcmp black to galls, the composition of finished iron-gall, logwood, vanadium, aniline black, and coloured inks, as well as a comprehensive scheme €or the tech~ical examination of inks, handwriting specimens and the identification of forge:-ies. Section 2 deals with the manufacture and examination of printing inks. ,tnd Section 3 with the miscellaneous materials entering into the compositilxx of copying, marking, safety, sympathetic, typewriter inks and so on. Amongst new matter may be noted references to the use of lignone sulphni--,ites in connection with writing ink, a scheme for the identification of individual con- stituents in inks in the form of writing, and the application of filtered ultra-.& if )let light and of infra-red photography in the elucidation of those problems to which such methods are suited.The British Government Standard Specificatior:s for Writing Inks, revised in 1928, are included for the first time. The avaihble evidence upon the constitution of gallotannin is brought up to date and <tbly reviewed, and there is a Comprehensive list of British patents. It is as difficult to withhold admiration of the encyclopaedic scope cjf the matter and references in this book as it is of the erudition and industry displiiyed in its compilation. Practically nothing that comes to mind has escaped atterition, and it is with rather impish glee that the reviewer, after careful search, asserts that he finds no specific reference to the type of alkaline (ammoniacal) gallotannate- iron ink, said t o find favour in the United States, although the di-ammonium hydroxyferrigallate compound of Silbermann and Ozorovitz receives notice. Nor is there mention of that class of quick-drying writing fluids which depend for their efficiency upon partial destruction of the paper sizing by caustic alk 1.5 or sodium silicate. There is no evidence that lignone sulphonate inks have proved se-rious competitors to iron-gall writing inks (pp. 15 and 175).
