SummaryAn outbreak of suspected avain botulism in the Perth metropolitan area was investigated. From the examination of various soil samples and animal specimens it was concluded that the outbreak was in fact botulism and was caused byClostridium botulinumtype Cα. The epidemiology of such outbreaks is discussed.

SummaryAmylase and lipase activity in the plasma and amylase activity in the peritoneal exudate have been followed in female albino rats after pancreatic duct obstruction with bile bypass and after obstruction to the common pancreaticobiliary duct.The enzyme activities rose rapidly to a maximum in 6 to 12 hours after operation; thereafter in rats with pancreaticobiliary duct ligation the levels fell at first rapidly and then more slowly; when the pancreatic duet alone was obstructed a second peak of activity occurred at 24 hours.When the enzyme levels were raised the ratio of amylase activity in the peritoneal exudate to that in the plasma became reversed from the normal and remained fairly steady at the altered value of about 14:1. With obstruction to the pancreatic duct alone there was a close correlation between peritoneal exudate amylase and plasma amylase in rats killed at the same time after operation; the correlation was not so close when the pancreaticobiliary duct was obstructed.The ratio of plasma amylase to plasma lipase fluctuated with time after operation.

SummaryThe potentiating action of adrenaline and noradrenaline on the contractions of the isolated guinea‐pig vas deferens in response to hypogastric nerve stimulation was, reversed in the presence of low (i.e., non‐blocking) concentrations of tlie α adrenergic blocking drugs. Reduction in amplitude of the nerve‐induced contractions also occcurred when isoprenaline was added to the organ bath. DCI blockd the inhibition caused by isoprenaline and by adrenaline in the presence of α blocking drugs. These catecholamines also reduced the contractions of the vas deferens in response to acetylcholine. It is suggested that these results can be explained by the presence of both α and β receptors in this non‐Spontaneously active smooth muscle.

SummaryIn the lactating quokka (Setonix brachyurus) parenteral iron. as ferrous ammonium sulphate solution, was administered in an attempt to raise the milk iron. Following a single large intraperitoneal dose a rise in milk iron occurred within hours. There was, however, no clear relationship between the rise and the amount of iron injected and there was reason to believe the rise had been associated with unphysiologically high plasma iron cocentrations. During continuous intravenous infusion of iron at controlled rates plasma iron was elevated to maximal levels not exceeding plasma total iron binding capacity and under these conditions no significant alteration in milk iron occurred within four hours.A progressive and statistically significant rise in total plasma iron binding capacity which occurred during intravenous infusion of iron was probably the manifestation of a redistribution of intra‐ and extravascular transferrin in response to the need for more rapid removal of iron from the plasma.

SummaryThe ability ofE. coli086to absorb anti‐B globulins from human sera has been confirmed, and the opsonic effectiveness of these adsorbed globulins has been studiedin vitro, using mouse peritoneal macrophages as test phagocytes. Fresh anti‐B sera were highly opsonic forE. coli086, whereas control sera lacking, these globulins were only weakly active. Absorption of pooled anti‐B serum with group B red fells greatly reduced opsonic power, and heating at 56° for 30 minutes caused a similar loss, although the titre of anti‐B saline agglutinins and the ability ofE. coli086to absorb them remained the same. It was concluded that the opsonising power of anti‐B sera was not due to 19S type saline agglutinins acting alone, but needed complement for it to be effective. The possible contribution of ABO blood group isoagglatinins to immunity is discussed.

SummaryTheS. lactisfolate activity of human liver tissue has been measured in 78 specimens obtained by aspiration biopsy. The results in cirrhosis were significantly lower than in normal specimens, and results in other conditions were variable. It is considered that liver pathology, as well as nutrition, is a factor determining liver folate activity.Liver folate activity was related, with a high degree of significance, to liver vitamin B12content, but not to serum vitamin B12concentration or the results of conventional liver function tests.

SummaryIn a search for more efficient methods of treatment of peripheral vascular disease, the technique of iontophoresis of guanethidine into fingers of healthy male volunteers has been investigated. The effects of this drug on heat output in 10 subjects and on sympathetic vasoconstrictor reflexes in five subjects were measured by calorimetry. Although an increase in heat output and partial sympathetic blockade occurred, the degree of these changes was much less than after intra‐arterial guanethidine, and the doses of drug required per unit volume of tissue were greater. Furthermore, the occurrence of ulcers after iontophoresis precludes this form of administration from clinical practice.

SummaryThe abnormal haemoglobins E, H and Lepore occur to a limited extent in New Guinea. Specimens of these were compared with their non‐New Guinea counterparts by “fingerprinting”. The haemoglobins E and H were found to be identical with haemoglobins E and H occurring elsewhere. The Lepore haemoglobin was found to be markedly different from a Lepore specimen from an individual of Mediterranean origin, but identical with LeporeHOLLANDIA.
