Radiation sources have been used in process control for over 40 years. Their use in inspection, implying visual examination, although of much earlier origin in the form of gamma radiography, is also of recent emergence in the form of tomographic methods. This paper firstly reviews the justification for the continued world-wide usage of isotopic methods. It then reviews a selection of innovative process control applications, based on radiation sources, as illustrations of the present state of the art and also describes recent progress in inspection methods including progress in the development of on-line facilities. For all applications involving radiation sources, careful selection of parameters is required to achieve the highest efficiency compatible with an integrity suitable for the intended application. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the common principles on which the fabrication of sources is based in order to satisfy National and International safety legislation.

The main apparatus being a part of the installation for coal liquefaction is a flow reactor, in which high-pressure hydrogenation process of coal extract occurs. In order to analyse the work of the hydrogenation unit a series of radiotracer experiments have been carried out. Assuming suitability of the dispersion model of fluid flow for the actual extract flow conditions within the reactor, the Peclet number and the mean residence time of the flowing medium within the catalytic bed of the reactor and the reaction space over the bed have been calculated. The experimental data have been used for the operation analysis of the hydrogenation reactor, examined within the range of technological parameters varied.

In a great number of problems movement, location and configuration of substantial elements are random. A general random model was constructed and a theoretical solution to the problem elaborated when activity distribution of elements of investigated materials and distribution of radiation intensity of these elements after their arrangement are known, whereas distribution features characterizing random arrangement of these elements are searched. The theory was examplified by investigation of cultivated plant seeds arrangement after sowing.

The effect of Gamma radiation on the degradation of the (M–O) bond of some divalent acetylacetonate complexes was followed by IR spectrophotometry. The rate of degradation, K(M–O), obeyed a first order kinetics. The obtained K(M–O) of the different metal acetylacetonate complexes are found to be linearly increase by the increase in the atomic radii of the complexed cations.

An experimental investigation of the absolute differential neutron flux of D-T compact neutron generator and spatial energy distributions within matter, using the threshold monitors technique have been carried out. Materials used were lead, glass, concrete, sea water and water, as well as air. Moreover, the neutron buildup factors within these media have been determined.

As a part of a research programme on the treatment of a radioactive process waste water by foam separation techniques, adsorbing colloid flotation was tested to remove141Ce,60Co,65Zn and89Sr from the waste water. Potassium oleate was used as the collector, and Fe(III) hydroxide, Al(III) hydroxide or Co(II) hydroxide as the coprecipitant. Under the optimal conditions; removals exceeding 99% could be achieved for65Zn with any of the tested coprecipitants, for144Ce with Fe(III) and Co(II) hydroxides and for60Co with only Co(II) hydroxide. For89Sr removals >90% could be achieved with only Fe(III) hydroxide. The adsorbing colloid flotation process was compared with both chemical precipitation and ion exchange, and advantages of adsorbing colloid flotaion were enumerated.

Experimental details regarding the determination of uranium in rocks and minerals by mass spectrometric isotope dilution technique with233U as tracer is discussed. The values obtained are compared with other techniques and also with isotope dilution technique where235U enriched spike is employed. The importance of sampling in the accurate determination of uranium in rock sample, where it is heterogeneously distributed, is pointed out.
