The review article deals with the sorption and isotopic exchange of radionuclides in gaseous phase on activated charcoal and on inorganic sorbents, it presents the physical and chemical characteristics of radionuclides, the sources of gaseous forms of radionuclides as well as the composition of radioactive gases from some nuclear facilities.

The basaltic rocks of Costa Rica show a wide range of chemical compositions. By means of INAA measurements a correlation matrix has been derived and there is a positive correlation of the REE and Th with U, Hf, Ta and Rb in basaltic rocks and a negative correlation of the REE with Co, Sc, Cs and Fe.

An essentially new statistical approach to nuclear particle track detector spectrometry is proposed on the basis of Saleh-Teich's formalism for the identification and quantitative analysis of nuclear particles. A specific version of this mathematical model is the probabilistic statistical model of β-particle and internal conversion electron nuclear photoemulsion spectrometry.

The pre-irradiation annealing was studied in the temperature range of 100 … 350 °C for silicate glass at different annealing times. The annealing raising the tracks density. The optimum annealing temperature was 250 °C. The annealing time was found to be hardly effected at the first hundred hours. The preannealing was found to be the hardness of the silicate glass so that the bulk etching rate decreases. The activation energy for bulk etching was found to be (0.3135 eV), the annealing did not change its value.

The hydrolysis of Zr(IV) compounds was investigated using the horizontal zone electromigration method and zirconium 95 as radioactive indicator. For this reason the ion mobility of Zr(IV) was measured detecting the γ-rays of zirconium 95 at 298 Kin dependence on pH and for the both concentrations of czr≲ 10−8M and czr= 4 · 10−3M. At the lower concentration of Zr ions the hydrolysis constants of Zr ions were determined for the mononuclear hydroxides(i = 1 … 4). At the higher concentration (czr= 4 · 10−3M) polynuclear cationic species are formed.

Transfer coefficients of strontium in the system soil/plant showed a dependence on the soil type. No distinctions were observed between the studied plants from the concentrations and the two applied chemical species of strontium (nitrate and chloride). The influence of the concentration of strontium in each series of experiments was statistically significant.

The summary of radiation monitoring results corresponds closely with the introductory paper to the compilation of individual data measured in the GDR in the period May to September 1986, which was submitted to the International Atomic Energy Agency in October 1986. The most important conclusion to be drawn from these results is that it was at no time necessary to restrict food consumption or to change nutritional habits in order to avoid detrimental health effects.

Anyone living in an urbanized and industrialized society is constantly exposed to many kinds of risks. The rate of some of those risks, such as traffic accidents, fires andstreet violence, is known fairly well; examples of these we see in our daily papers. Some of the risks are much more difficult to comprehend. For example, what level of health hazard is represented by air pollution or the use of pesticides in agriculture or power production ? Some risks we keep taking consciously – those relating to smoking and alcohol or to sports, in particular to cycling and motor cycling, swimming, hunting and mountaineering. We must believe the risk to be reasonable in proportion to the satisfaction or advantage we gain by taking it. The risks of radiation also seem to bo difficult to estimate.
