摘要:
This study examined the feasibility of conducting home remediation interventions that would lower allergen levels among low-income, inner city households in Birmingham, Alabama. The primary objectives were to use established neighborhood infrastructure to identify households for remediation, and to conduct inspection and remediation activities to potentially prevent or control asthma symptoms related to indoor air environmental contaminants. This study was undertaken in conjunction with the Department of Community Development (DCD) of Birmingham, Alabama. The intervention was successful, although many tasks would be performed differently and with different emphases in the future. Dust mite allergen levels were clearly lowered with impermeable mattress covers and by replacing carpets with nonporous floor coverings. Findings from this study should provide baseline information and improve the chances for success in future studies.

摘要:
The postpartum is a time when healthy, young women interact with the health care system and when they may be uniquely interested in increasing healthy behaviors both for their own welfare and that of their newborn infant. For women who care for small preterm infants, unique challenges may be posed in optimizing healthy behaviors in the early months of their young infants' lives. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in health behaviors between mothers of preterm, very low birth-weight infants and of mothers of healthy term infants. Specifically, changes in weight loss, nutrition, exercise, sleep, caffeine intake, and smoking were examined over the first four postpartum months. The sample consisted of 124 mothers of term and preterm infants who reported weight, a 24-hour diet recall, a sleep log, and the Four Week Physical Activity Questionnaire, and who had peripheral blood drawn to measure caffeine and cotinine. No differences were noted in the health behaviors of mothers of preterm and term infants. Mothers were successful in losing weight and managing sleep. Minimal amounts of caffeine were ingested. However, mothers consumed high fat diets, had minimal exercise, and increased smoking activity over the first four postpartum months. Recommendations for health care professionals are made.

摘要:
The impact of a health education program to help families manage chronic disease will be determined not only by the demonstrated effectiveness of the intervention but also by the quality and breadth of program implementation. A theory-based intervention is evaluated that diffuses the Cystic Fibrosis Family Education Program (CF FEP) to approximately 20,000 families nationwide. Surveys of 106 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-certified CF centers are used in a cross-sectional study of the theory-based determinants of diffusion. Results describe: (1) the proportion of CF centers targeted who adopted and implemented the CF FEP; (2) the perceptions of program or center characteristics associated with program use, fidelity and maintenance/institutionalization; and (3) the relationship between the method of decision-making used by the center to adopt the program and program use, fidelity, and maintenance/institutionalization.

摘要:
This study examined the impact of a seven-week health promotion program on the health behaviors of 35 older adults who were inactive, overweight, or physically limited. Post-test self-reports, corroborated by family members or friends, revealed that older adults adopted new exercise behaviors in the short-run. Eight months later, however, most older adults were no longer exercising on a regular basis. The health promotion program was taught by 21 physical and occupational therapy students as part of a one-semester elective course entitled Health Promotion and Aging.

摘要:
A clear relationship exists between chronic illness and depression. Longitudinal studies have indicated that chronic illness often precedes the onset of depressive symptoms. The goal of this study was to determine if a community-based intervention is useful for preventing depression in African American elders with chronic illnesses. The elders were randomly divided into two groups. One group participated in a program in which they were educated about their illnesses and were taught pain management strategies. The second group participated in a program that was not related to their illnesses. The symptoms of depression among the two groups were compared one year after the intervention and again one year later. The results indicated that the elders who were educated about their illnesses had fewer symptoms of depression than those who received no education. Implications for preventing depression in elders are discussed.

摘要:
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder with unknown etiology. The condition is accompanied by a variety of other symptoms that make it difficult to diagnose and results in millions of dollars being spent pursuing a diagnosis and effective treatments. A needs assessment survey was developed as a means of gathering data regarding symptoms, the severity of symptoms, and the effectiveness of treatments currently used by study participants. The study sample included 145 individuals medically diagnosed with fibromyalgia who attended support group meetings throughout Illinois. Results of this study were used to learn knowledge about the symptoms and needs of individuals with FMS and identify effective self-care strategies. This article offers recommendations for community health practitioners which would promote a healthier lifestyle and improve the quality of life for individuals with FMS and their families.
