摘要:
Summary:Early detection and efficacious treatment have prolonged the lives of women diagnosed with breast cancer. Although many of these women have survived more than 5 years, there is minimal knowledge of their use of complementary and alternative medical (CAM) treatments. A qualitative focus group study was conducted with 66 breast cancer survivors, ranging in age from 32 to 85 years, with time since diagnosis 2 to 28 years. This article will discuss specific reasons breast cancer survivors reported for using CAM, the ways in which breast cancer survivors blended these therapies with conventional Western medicine, and health care providers' roles in supporting breast cancer survivors' use of CAM approaches.

摘要:
Summary:Heart disease is the leading cause of death among Americans each year, yet the misperception still exists that cardiovascular disease is not a serious health problem for women. Evidence indicates that anxiety contributes to the development of heart disease. The primary purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness-based stress reduction program to reduce anxiety in women with heart disease. Anxiety, emotional control, coping styles, and health locus of control were compared in a treatment and control group of women with heart disease. Post-intervention analyses provide initial support for beneficial effects of this program.

摘要:
Summary:Impaired peripheral blood flow causes complications, disabilities, expenses, and deaths among persons with diabetes mellitus. Many individuals suffer from lower-extremity pain, reduced functional status, and impaired quality of life. Current conventional treatments include lifestyle modification, exercise, medication, and surgery. However, these approaches are often impractical or insufficient. Thermal biofeedback, however, alone or in conjunction with other mind-body techniques, improves peripheral circulation, pain, neuropathy, ulcer healing, ambulatory activity, and quality of life. It is noninvasive, inexpensive, and consistent with community-based approaches to diabetes self-management. As an adjunct to the medical management of diabetes, thermal biofeedback may help ameliorate some of the vascular complications.

摘要:
Summary:Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disease that is characterized by joint stiffness in the morning, symmetric joint swelling, and generalized fatigue. Given the limitations of medical treatment and the ongoing problems with symptom management, it is not at all surprising that many individuals with RA turn to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies. This article provides a brief overview of what is known about CAM use in RA, presents information on a few of the most popular therapies, and recommends further resources for nurses who work with individuals with RA.

摘要:
Summary:With an unprecedented number of women reaching midlife, the impact of menopause has become a significant public health issue. Recent findings have left women and practitioners questioning traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and searching for reasonable alternatives. Growing numbers of women in this country are choosing to use natural progesterone and estrogen to treat symptoms of menopause. This article describes a program that focuses on education, client participation, and alternative methodology to support individualized HRT therapy using natural compounded bio-identical hormones.

摘要:
Summary:The number of cancer patients seeking complementary therapies to deal with their disease has increased steadily in recent decades. Complementary therapies can be helpful to cancer patients because they address some of the pervasive psychosocial difficulties associated with this disease. One mind-body technique is meditation. While programs using meditation have been developed for specific health populations, such as heart disease and addictions, an equivalent, well-established program for cancer patients is lacking. This article reviews the literature and proposes a complementary meditation program designed specifically for use with cancer patients.

摘要:
Summary:Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is common in the United States, particularly among middle-aged women for symptoms commonly reported during perimenopause. The study examined the relationship between women's report of perimenopausal symptoms and the use of CAM and socioeconomic or cultural factors. The prevalence of CAM use was 33%; approximately 94% reported use of CAM therapies and 23% used CAM practitioners. Those who used CAM were younger and better educated; more often they reported pelvic pain and painful intercourse. The only demographic factor to predict use of alternative medicine was education.
