摘要:
Numerous factors are thought to prevent the successful implementation of domestic violence intervention protocols and programs that are designed to encourage physicians and nurses to identify and appropriately treat battered women. Using the PRECEDE-PROCEED model of behavior change as a guide, this study investigated baseline factors associated with clinician screening behaviors prior to its implementation. Perceived competence, a composite measure of self-efficacy around specific clinically relevant behaviors, emerged as the primary predictor of all behaviors. In addition, belief that clinicians should screen all women as part of a routine history or physical examination emerged as a predictor for routine screening.

摘要:
Violence during pregnancy directly impacts the mental and physical health of pregnant women. We assessed the prevalence and correlates of physical violence around the time of pregnancy in a representative sample of 6,718 women in South Carolina. Physical violence, defined as “being physically hurt by husband or partner” or “being involved in a physical fight” was reported by 10.9% of recently pregnant women. These were correlates of violence: experiencing increased numbers of stressful life events, being unmarried, having increased parity, being on Medicaid, and having an unwanted pregnancy. Screening to identify violence in pregnancy in health care settings is vital to maternal and child health. However, identifying violence is not enough; community resources and clinic-based support are needed to help women deal with violence in their lives.

摘要:
This is a study of the frequency and correlates of selected violent behaviors in public high school students using the 1993 South Carolina Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The percentage who reported carrying a weapon in the last 30 days varied from 9% among white females to 50% among white males. Over 37% of the students reported being in a fight in the last month. About 12% reported someone had forced them to have sexual intercourse, and 6% reported having forced someone else to have sexual intercourse. The most consistent predictor of all outcomes was substance use, though having had sexual intercourse was correlated with most outcomes. Health professionals working to prevent violent and aggressive behavior among adolescents should incorporate identified risk factors into assessment and intervention efforts that target coexisting high-risk behaviors and provide treatment or referral options.

摘要:
Intimate partner violence harms millions of women with devastating physical and mental health consequences for them and their children. Low-income women and children are at high risk. The recent welfare legislation with strict work requirements and optional family violence provisions could make many victims choose to stay with their abusers with devastating consequences. This article argues that intimate partner violence extends beyond the current welfare debate and will require careful strategic approaches and partnerships to contain the problem. Durable public, community, and private partnerships at local, state, and national levels are critical to ending this shameful epidemic.

摘要:
Demographic, attitudinal, and behavioral differences were assessed among 9th through 12th grade African American adolescents to determine characteristic differences among high, medium, and low participators in a nonmandatory school and community-based sexual risk reduction project. Results show that individuals who are part of larger households are more likely to participate in after-school programs, and respondents who reported higher performance in school were more likely to be participants. In partial support of the Health Belief Model, various health threats were associated with participation, including having contracted a sexually transmitted disease at some time in the past, and among females, having been pregnant. Implications are discussed.

摘要:
The objectives of the study were to identify which risk factors for heart disease were most prevalent in a poor, underserved, rural Appalachian county. A random sample of medical records was selected (n=292) of adult men and women who participated in a countywide health care project. Data were obtained from a health risk appraisal questionnaire and other physical and demographic information and were analyzed using univariate and bivariate statistical procedures. The findings indicated that these rural Appalachian subjects had a significant number of heart disease risk factors: excessive smoking, lack of exercise, high fat diets, and abnormal serum lipid levels.
