A new way to explore the world of work has evolved after several years of field testing with employment service applicants and high school youth. The method uses small‐sized groups and structured interaction with a sequenced program for job search and planning. In a recent experimental‐control study concurrent in eight different states, the group members were found to have gained twice the number of jobs, gained in positive employability perceptions, and showed reduced social alienation. The groups are conducted for five members at a time. The short program takes two hours; the long program takes five sessions of three‐quarters of an hour each. Group leaders are prepared by trainers who have also been leaders. This article re‐examines data from the Nonreading Aptitude Test Battery (NATB) and General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB) test manuals in light of some conventionally accepted psychometric considerations. The NATB standardization sample is adequate. However, the validity is open to question since the NATB demonstrates only a modest correlation with the GATB. It is recommended that caution be employed in relating NATB profiles to the Occupational Aptitude Patterns' norms. Employment counselors, counselor supervisors, managers, and counselor educators were surveyed in Minnesota concerning the amounts of time that are now spent and should be spent in eleven employment counselor activities. All respondents generally agreed on the amounts of time that are now spent and should be spent in the activities. They also agreed that there should be significant increases (p>.05) in the amounts of time that should be spent in counseling, teaching, and research/follow‐up, and decreases in the amounts of time that should be spent in selection/intake and records/clerical activities. This article describes the academic content and evaluation of an inservice training model for Bureau of Employment Security interviewers and counselors. Preliminary data suggests that a workshop organized according to established features of systems analysis is personally and professionally helpful to most participants. Although the model appears to operate at a high level of productivity, new improvements are planned.

A paraprofessional inservice training model is presented which is based on the Employment Service Training Unit (ESTU) concept. The model encourages the use of professional staff in the local work setting as a viable source for training paraprofessional staff members. The advantages and disadvantages of current training programs are described, with the ESTU model presented as an alternative for a more effective paraprofessional training program.

Several authors have suggested that the presence of recording equipment inhibits the performance of helping personnel. Videotaping is generally thought to be more discomforting than audiotaping. Findings of this study, using 39 Bureau of Employment Security interviews and coached clients, contraindicate previous research and speculation.

The General Aptitude Test Battery, used by many state employment services as a counseling tool, has been criticized as an unfair screening device. A less restrictive policy of pretest coaching and retesting, combined with action research on the effects of remedial education on aptitudes scores is suggested, rather than a return to subjective assessment.
