摘要:
AbstractThe relationship between length and weight was calculated for nine taxa of eucalypt forest and woodland invertebrates from south‐eastern New South Wales. Length and weight were highly correlated. For the majority of taxa the relationship was best described by a power model. There were no significant differences between the length‐weight regressions of Australian and North American taxa. This strengthens the value of generalized regressions for estimates of biomass from invertebrate length data in ecological stud

摘要:
AbstractAspects of the ecology of Thrips imaginis Bagnall in flowers of Echium plantagineum L. are described and subjected to experimental analysis.Thrips eggs were mostly laid in plant parts that were not lost when the short‐lived flowers abscissed. The abundance of adults and larvae in flowers from the bud stage through to abscission was determined. Larvae usually required more than one flower to complete development and so had to migrate between flowers to survive. Larvae generally remained between the bases of the stamen filaments when in direct sunlight, but moved along the filaments to the anthers for rapid pollen feeding during low light intensity, especially at night. There was little spatial and temporal overlap between thrips larvae and honeybees in the flowers. Ants can cause much damage to the flowers and can feed on thrips.Pollen feeding of T. imaginis is described. The species of pollen grain affects feeding, and this may influence breeding success.Low u.v.‐reflecting white, blue and yellow water traps caught more T. imaginis that green, red, black and high u.v.‐reflecting white. These results agree well with the numbers of adults in several native and non‐native flowers of various colours.Adult female thrips colour variation is correlated with for ewing length, and hence reflects factors acting on a pre‐ad

摘要:
AbstractThe amount of standing plant material in the ground storey and its botanical composition are compared for two central Australian mulga communities, one with a predominantly annual understorey and the other with a predominantly perennial understorey. Amounts of litter and nutrient levels in standing plant material, litter and soils are also compared. The number of species, particularly forbs, was greater in the annual community and differences in botanical composition are unlikely to have been caused by cattle grazing. The differences may be attributable in part to the greater proximity of the annual community to sources of alluvial material, and thus to better supplies of nutrients. For the 13 1/2 month study period following exceptional summer rain, the weight of herbage in the perennial community generally exceeded that in the annual community, whereas the weight of litter was less in the perennial community. Of a large number of plant and soil nutrients, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium were lower in the perennial community; these three nutrients, together with nitrogen, may be deficient for either plant growth or cattle diet in that community. The amount of sulphur was lower in the annual community but was unlikely to be deficient.

摘要:
AbstractThe annual leaf fall of three species of cool temperate forest trees was examined for two different consecutive seasons at two localities in Tasmania. The reverse summation of the sequential fall of leaves throughout an annual cycle provided a population biomass that was amenable to life table analyses.Rates of leaf fall were compared between species at different times, and were related to temperature. The threshold temperature for leaf fall to commence was approximately 11–12°C. Estimates of the probability of leaves remaining on trees at different times through the cycle were also obtain

摘要:
AbstractThe survival of lignotuberous seedlings of Eucalyptus pauciflora, E. dalrympleana and E. dives following an intense experimental fire was monitored in montane forest in the Brindabella Ranges, Australian Capital Territory. Percentage survival was the same for each species (60%), but it was shown that an individual was more likely to survive if it was large and growing vigorously before the fire. Survival was also enhanced if the individual was growing in a patch of low litter load and if it experienced a locally low fire intensity. Lignotuberous seedlings of E. dalrympleana, a species of the subgenus Symphyomyrtus, recovered more quickly than the other two species which are of the subgenus Monocalyptus. This result parallels conclusions concerning different initial growth rates between seedlings of the subgenera.

摘要:
AbstractThe series of asymptotic yield‐density curves traversed by even‐aged monospecific stands of plants at the same resource level is described by the function f(wmaxymax), where wmax= spaced plant weight and ymax= maximum yield possible at high densities. If the resource level at which the stands are grown is reduced, two sets of outcomes are possible. The stands at the decreased resource level may show essentially the same crowding effects as the control stands, but at a slower rate (altered‐speed hypothesis). This hypothesis implies a common family of yield‐density curves and a common thinning line for stands at different resource level may occur not only at a different rate at a harvest in the stands of higher growth. Alternatively, crowding effects at a reduced resource level may not only occur at a different rate to the controls but take a different course, leading to more intense crowding effects at a harvest being observed in the stands of lower growth (altered‐form hypothesis). Thus a different family of yield‐density curves and different thinning lines would apply at each resource level. For yield‐density curves, the altered‐speed hypothesis applied if f(wmax, ymax) is the same at each resource level. If this function differs with resource level, the altered‐form hypothesis applies at a harvest provided the ratio ymax/wmaxis less at the low resource level. Cases intermediate between these two hypotheses may occur. For thinning lines differences in the position of the non‐thinning/self‐thinning boundary and in f(wmax, ymax) can affect the intercept and slope of thinning lines. The theoretical magnitude of these differences are discussed. Examples of both hypotheses are reviewed. For the altered form cases differences in non‐thinning crowding effects between resource levels are capable of causing significant differ
