This article addresses a need to assess the acceptability and evaluation of behavioral treatment as it is applied in child and adolescent inpatient settings. The choice of when and how to use behavioral interventions and the implications of these choices may present the nurse with certain ethical dilemmas related to ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, and maleficence. In addition, the inpatient milieu structure is examined relative to possible ethical dilemmas.

This study examined correlates of maternal depression among Mexican‐American migrant farmworker mothers. One hundred Mexican‐American migrant farmworker mothers of preschoolers who participated in the Texas Migrant Council's Headstart program were interviewed. The results suggested that this sample of mothers was at risk for depression. This article describes a support group of two years' duration for physically, sexually, and emotionally abused adolescents in an inpatient unit at the University of Michigan Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital. Group characteristics, group dynamics, and emotional reactions of the adolescents are discussed. This experience suggests that a support group does not necessarily need a homogeneous membership, as the literature often indicates, to be successful.

This article introduces child and adolescent psychiatric nurses to the use of propranolol for aggression in children and adolescents. The use of propranolol is relatively new in the area of psychiatry. A retrospective chart review of patients who had received propranolol was conducted in an intermediate care hospital. Case illustrations are presented.

Child psychiatric inpatients have little or no control over their treatment. Anxiety and fear are normal reactions to the hospitalization and treatment process. Pharmacotherapy is an intervention that the child often perceives as an indicator of pathology. This article presents various methodologies to teach children about their medication treatment. Puppetry, graphics, art, and discussion were techniques used in a peer group to impart knowledge and decrease anxiety, fear, and negativity.
