It is with sadness and deep regret that we hear of the passing of the Associated Examination Board's A level in electronic systems. According to information released, the summer examination in 1994 is the last time this syllabus will be examined. This is a tragedy. The movement to introduce electronics into schools made one of its early leaps forward by the introduction of this syllabus in the late 1970s. This syllabus laid much of the groundwork for O level and GCSE electronics and introduced terminology and concepts that have found their way into the National Curriculum.

This project was born of a challenge.One December a colleague who was the IT Co-ordinator produced a superb range of Christmas cards using a well known CAD package. I felt just a little envious that I, a mere engineer, could not match his Christmas contribution. This was not helped by his light-hearted condemnation of ‘hardware’. The gauntlet was thrown.

In 1851, John Tyndall passed a ray off light down a jet of water and prophesied that this kind off capability might one day be useful in communications. In the 1960s several researchers carried out experiments transmitting light signals down glass cables. Unfortunately the glass available at the time was too impure and tended to absorb too much of the light. Then in 1970 Corning Glass produced a brand of exceptionally pure glass which could be made into long thin rods. Thus optical fibre technology was born.

My family own a house in a remote area of the scottish highlands which is often impossible to reach during the winter due to snow. It is then, when it is so cold, that it is essential, but impossible to switch on the central heating to stop the pipes from freezing.I have developed a system that is able to activate the central heating in the house in scotland from any destination by means of telephone communication.

The quotation is from Faraday's diary, the sentence that followed the famous exclamation ‘All this is a dream!’, written on 19th march 1849, when he forecast the fundamental connection between inertia and electromagnetism — a connection that Einstein was later to call ‘the key to the cosmos’ and to call his own.Faraday was an experimentalist, Einstein a theoretical physicist. In more recent years there has been an increasing tendency to worship at the shrine of the theoretician rather than pay tribute to the pioneers of technology who alone made possible the creation of wealth — a wealth that ultimately allowed a privileged minority to indulge in the luxury that was to become ‘science’.
