The National Curriculum emphasises the integration of technologies, and computer control is no exception. It should form a part of other technology activities and this requires an open-ended approach. Such an approach is offered by the various buffer boxes on the market.

The captain sat on the banks of the M25 by the Dartford Tunnel overlooking the southbound traffic as it burrowed its way underground. He observed the pained expressions of the drivers who for all their efforts to change lanes still only managed a limping speed of five miles an hour, while from the mouth of the northbound tunnel cars exploded out with drivers showing almost careless abandon after their release.

摘要:
This article is the second of a two-part article on a power station simulation project organised at St Leonard's RC Comprehensive School in Durham. The project started originally with a chance remark by Mike Gardiner, a civil engineer with Durham County Council Highways Department, to Dennis Harrington, the Head of Science at the school. In an effort to demonstrate a ‘real-world’ application of A-level physics to pupils, it was suggested that an extra-curricular project be initiated involving the design and construction of an electronic simulation of a coal-fired power station. A power station was chosen because it encapsulates many of the aspects of A-level physics: AC theory, rotational dynamics, kinetic theory and thermodynamics.

摘要:
In the past 20 years, I have been involved in pioneering developments with associated pressure lobbies to establish the place of Electronics in Technology in the education of all pupils. Over this summer break I had cause to dismantle my office at home to create an extra bedroom and with that to sort and discard large amounts of correspondence and accumulated documentation. In that process I came across many articles, variously authored, making cases of why, how, where, when electronics. Many of these expressed sentiments about ‘entitlement’ for all.

The work began with a group of third and fourth year juniors in their computer club. Two fourth year girls, Emily Dring and Kelly Johnson, remembered using Bigtrak in the infants school although they had not done anything like this since. They were enthusiastic to be allowed to use it again. They quickly rediscovered how to program the vehicle and wrote down directions using the notation which can be seen on the accompanying illustrations.

The project in the GCSE Technology course accounts for 50% of the final mark. Because of this heavy weighting towards the project, fifth-form technology students are allocated two terms worth of lessons, during which they must design, build and test their chosen project. Ideally (though not a necessity) the project should be original, and my idea was to construct a ‘parking aid’.

摘要:
In this article, the author, a former student at Luton Sixth Form College, describes how he designed and built a multifrequency transmitter for radiocontrolled models. This was a major project for his GCE A-level Technology examination, June 1989. The project was awarded first prize of £1000 in ‘Engineering Challenge 89’ for Bedfordshire Schools, and third prize in the South East of Britain regional final ‘Young Engineers for Britain 89’ competition.

摘要:
This material was developed in Scotland for the Standard Grade Technological Studies course. The Scottish system differs in many aspects from the National Curriculum being developed in England and Wales. The ideas outlined here are particularly relevant to the National Curriculum, and teachers will be able to develop them in context. For example in the Attainment Target, Developing and communicating ideas, the Programme of Study for Key Stage 4 states that pupils should be taught to analyse alternative solutions to produce a better design proposal.
